This is something I never do so I am truly inexperienced. I put a movie DVD in and it opens with Windows Media Player, you can hear the sound perfectly but there is no picture. I remember at one time I could insert a DVD and it would open automatically and begin playing with no problem, when I hit "autoplay" it now says "the file is corrupted and unreadable. "
I would appreciate any help someone may be able to give me with this problem.

    Thanks,

    Reid

Hi Reid. The reason you can't play DVD's is because you are missing the required codecs. Download and install K-Lite Codec Pack.

Also make sure you are using Windows Media Player 11 as well.

I have K-Lite Codec Pack Standard 6.4.0 loaded and Windows Media Player 11 but I'm still not able to play the movie DVD "You've Got Mail. "

Ok. Open Windows Media Player and click Tools< Options. On the general tab make sure the download codecs automatically checkbox is checked. Now click on the file types tab. Make sure all the file types are checked. When done click apply and click ok. Restart Windows Media Player for the changes to take effect.

Is the DVD a bought copy or has it been burned in a PC. The error message you have received "the file is corrupted and unreadable" would suggest you have a bad copy that was burned incorrectly.

I am stupid to this because I've never used it in this application. When I open Windows Media Player it shows the same screen you see when it opens in attemp to play the DVD, there is no "Tools<Options" I can see or find.
This is a new movie video, not a copy, I have tried several with the same results.

Have you got a Laser cleaning disc that you can run through the player.

You say playing DVD's was never a problem, was anything changed just before the problem began.

This is a new DVD player and there is no problem when it reads a software disc for download purposes. This is really blowing my mind, do you know the steps for checking the decoder, if there is one?

So, you have only had this problem since fitting a new cd drive?

I only found a way to check the decoder in media player 10.

I have media player 12 so this may not apply. To find the tools tab in my version you have to make the tool bar visible which has 'Tools' in it.

Select 'Organise' from the drop down menu select 'Layout' in the next menu click on 'Show Menu Bar'. This makes a new bar appear at the top of the page.

There is no general tab under 'Tools' > 'Options' or 'File Types' but maybe there is in version 11.

If you click on 'Play' and then select 'DVD, VCD or CD Audio' it will show your CD drives and whatever is in them. With a disc inserted select the drive and see if that works.

Other than this I can only suggest checking that the CD drive drivers are correctly installed and that you have correctly installed the codecs pack.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Reid, are you still having trouble with your DVD movie?

Just to throw in my thoughts: I purchased a set of 4 movies and one disc would not play. I Emailed the Company who produced the set and explained the problem and they sent me a replacement - worked fine. There was obviously a problem as these DVD discs are churned out in the hundreds of thousands.

Have you checked Region setting? Device Manager > DVD Drives > 'your unit' > Properties > Region > set your Region > Close out.

Does your DVD use only the IDE cable?
    Is it 80 wire cable?
Is the jumper set correctly on DVD unit?

    Cheers Neil.

That's weird, this codec is for showing subtitles, and that fixed the problem:confused::confused:

I'm sorry but have no idea, I was told to try this and it worked, but do not know why.
