Is your DNS and/or WINS settings set? Do you have a DNS server or WINS server? Name resolution and searches occur using one of these two services ... unless you have netbios enabled ... then they'll talk via broadcast.

Is your DNS server set in your settings? Is NetBios active on the server? Any more info you can provide about your setup and protocals?

I have the dns server listed on the clients Preferred dns server.

The server has net bios checked.

Do I have to have anything inreverse lookup on the server dns?

This is what I get....A static IP client cannot ping a dhcp client by name. A static IP client can ping a static IP client by name. the dhcp client can ping everyone.

so my problem is pinging from static to dhcp by name

My clients are all XP or W2000.

Strange indeed. And gotta be frustrating.

If a static-assigned PC pings a known DHCP IP using the -a switch, is a name returned as well? If so, just the name or the FQDN. For instance, COMPUTER-NAME or COMPUTER-NAME.mydomain.com

Static cannot ping dhcp. dhcp can ping everyone. and that comes back with the fqdn.

I think some settings that DHCP is feeding to it's clients aren't set up correctly on the static machines. Two things to try on a static PC that isn't behaving right now.

First, start DHCP Client (even though you won't be using it for address and such, I think this will allow the other values to be plugged in) and DNS client.

If that doesn't do it, leave those services running (autostart) and code in a primary/secondary DNS Server address.

If neither of the above works, post back and we'll try hard-coding some settings but the above is lots easier if it works.

Even though 2K doesn't normally need rebooting after network settings changes, I'd do it anyway while you are trying to get one PC working.

dhcp service is started automatically. I only have 1 dns server, and that IP is listed in the dns server address of tcp/ip.

When I try to ping from the static ip to the dhcp ip, I get this message:

Ping request could not find host. Please check the name and try again.

    One other thing....
I can see the computers in network neighborhood, but when I double click on them, I get this message:

\\name is not available. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin of this server to find out if you have access permissions. (which is me)

The network path was not found.

Sue - based on the last few bits of information you posted I'm almost positive you have either no DNS records or malformed DNS records for the Static IP systems.

I'd remove any DNS records for one of them, insure all the domain information in the network settings is correct, and then either force it to re-register or (more work but maybe more likely to do the job) remove the machine from the domain, reboot, and then add it back.

If that works, just do the same to the others.

I removed the computer from dnson the dns server. On the client I removed it from the domain. I added the computer back in dns (i didnot create a pointer record) I joing the computer back to the domain.

    Still doesn't work

    DNS
    client tcp/ip settings are:
.append primary and connections specific dns suffis
. append parent suffixes of the primary dns suffis
.register this connection address in dns

    Wins
    .enable netbios over tcp/ip
