I have recently reformated my hard drive, loaded windows 98 and installed ie6 sp1. I am on Broadband. When I open a web page and click on a link, the page opens and the old one shuts down, and rarely gives me an option to go back. This is very annoying, and I have tried every thing I know to correct it. I have selected " open new folder in its own window" and various other items which loke like they would cure it, but alas NO !!. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, can somebody help me with this. It is stopping me from being able to download files on some sites because the main window closes before the down load starts, and I cant manualy open a new window from the file menue or ctrl N.
I look forward to someone helping me with this as I am now at a dead end.

Try this...in IE, go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab. Scroll down to "Reuse Windows for launching shortcuts" and if it's checked, uncheck it. If it's not checked, check it. Click OK.

If the problem isn't solved, go back and undo the checking or unchecking and try again.

If that doesn't help, post back.

Have you tried the Internet Explorer Repair Tool? There are several ways to access it. One is Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|System Information|click on Tools|click on Internet Explorer Repair Tool. Wait while it does its job.

    still no luck

Thanks for all the help guys, I had tried most of that already but have tried again.
Did the ie6 repair, for the 2nd time, tried the tick /untick box for re-use windows etc and had a go at runing the *.dll files on the site that Brett sent. No joy as of yet. I have tried uninstalling ie6, and it came up with the same prob in ie 5. Have reinstalled ie 6, still no good.
Miz, I have a bit of experience in these things, but as you prorobably know, its impossible to know it all !! so anything that anyone might comeup with is welcome, however daft it may seem to you, it might just work !!
I thank you all for your help, and hope more will follow.

Have you given this a try?

Close all open Internet Explorer Windows.

Open Windows Explorer, Click View, click Folder Options, and then click File Types.

In the Registered File Types box, click URL:File Transfer Protocol, and then click Edit.

In the Actions box, click Open, and then click Edit.

The Application Used To Perform Action box may display the path to your Web browser as a short file name. Type the path to your Web browser using the full file name. For example, change:
    c:\progra~1\intern~1\iexplore.exe

    -to-

    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome %1
    (including the quotation marks).

Remove the checkmark from USE DDE

Click OK, and then click Close.

Repeat these steps for the following registered file types:

    URL:Gopher Protocol
    URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol
    URL:Hypertext Transfer protocol with Privacy

    Click Close.

NOTE: If you follow these steps, you may receive the following prompt when Internet Explorer starts:

Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?

Ensure that the "Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the default browser" check box is not checked under Internet Options, or the issue may recur. If you click Yes, the issue may recur.

    tried again

    Hi guys,

I dont have pop up killer or anything like that running, although I have Mcaffee virus checker running.
Rod, I tried a coiuple for those items you said earlier, and have just double checlked them but stil no good. I took out the "nohome" extension and tried it that way, and have reset it as you suggest and removed the star from the DDE text box from all the url things.
This is weird, I have never had anyting like this before. I read on microsofts knowlege base that if IE6 was running in KIOSK mode, it would cause the problems I have now, but I have no idea how to check to see if it is in KIOSK mode, or how to change it.
if anyone knows, please do tell !!
Many thanks you lot, its all appreciated.

The following article discusses Kiosk mode at greater length, though in reading it I doubt that this is your problem, unless of course you intentionally put your system into this mode. Also the article that you referred to in your post states that SP1 for IE6 resolved the Kiosk problem.

How to use Kiosk mode in Internet Explorer

Am I correct in assuming from your first post that when you click on a link the window that is currently opened is replaced by the new link? If so am I also correct in assuming that the go back arrow does not work?

    correct

    Hi Rod,

You are correct in your assumptions, that is exactly what happens, but sometimes I do get the back button active but it is hit and miss.
I have tried all the suggested methods, and looked at the link you gave me, but alas, there seems to be nothing one can do to get round the problem.
Kiosk mode seemed the most likely, but I dont purposefully go into Kiosk, I just start ie6 up as usual and it works ok other than the problem highlighted. I thought mabe Kiosk started autoimatically and if i could find out how it is switched on, I could then be able to switch it off.
Please tell me ytou know whats causing it !!
    Cheers

    While searching through a couple of Newsgroup sites looking for a solution to your problem I found several people who were having a problem similar to yours. In those cases clicking on a link was opening a blank window. They were directed to follow the directions contained in the following MS KB article;

Cannot Open New Internet Explorer Window

You might also want to open Internet Explorer and take a look at; Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom Levels and make sure that "Allow META Refresh" is Enabled.

Also found these two link that deal with BHO's (Browser Helper Objects). Don't know if you've downloaded and installed anything lately, but thought you might want to take a gander at them in case the KB Article or enabling Meta Refresh doesn't resolve your problem.

    done it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Done it !!!! The problem has now gone away !!! Thanks to you folk out there.
Rod, I had already down loaded a BHO kiling program, and run it up. It told me I had 3 BHO's 2 from Yahoo, and one from Adobe. I have had Yahoo and adobe for years and never had any probs before, so I left em running. I have just read the article about BHO Cop you linked me to, and decided to block all the BHOs with BHO Demon, and it has cured the problem !!! Yippee, etc. So, be warned everyone, Yahoo and Adobe can seriously effect your surfing !!
Once again, Many Thanks to all who Helped me out here, and I am gratefull of the time and effort you must have put in.
    Cheers:D
