    several days ago internet explorer stopped working.
    i can still surf the net using aol, or netscape navigator.
    i am using win 98.
    if i open IE the page address will appear at the very top, then just stops there. the page stays blank. at the very bottom where it used to say INTERNET, it now says UNKNOWN ZONE.

    IE may need to repair itself. Go into Control Panel, open Add/Remove Programs. Then scroll down to the listing for MS Internet Explorer, double click on it. A window will then pop up, select Repair Internet Explorer, click on OK, Be sure to reboot when it is done.
    Or reinstall IE.
    Good luck with Aol. It sometimes causes problems like this.

    Is it possible that the home page has been set to a blank page on your hard drive?
    Go into Internet Options, click on Connections. Highlight the Aol connection, click on Settings. Make sure the Automatically Detect Settings and Use Proxy Server are not selected.
    If that does not work, go here.

    I really think that AOL has ******* up your networking for you, it will not have been the first time.

    Really surprised that word ended up like that, not one of the Deadly Seven (George Carlin).

    it is definitely not my home page settings
    i have shorcut buttons on my keyboard for different websites, and they all do the same thing. the new window for the page opens, with the name of the site at the very top, but same thing happens, the page stays blank.
    i check the settings, and they are as u listed.

    If you are game, try the following:
    Click Start|Run, and type regsvr32 urlmon.dll. Press Enter. With luck you should see a message saying that the .dll has successfully registered.
    Now re-open IE, click Tools|Internet Options|Programs|click "resert Web Settings ".
    Has this helped?
    Another possibility is to restore oleaut32.dll from your Windows98 CD (or from Windows|Options|Cabs).
    The best solution is to ditch AOL.

    You may wish to wait for another member who has suffered this exact problem and has found a solution that worked or you can flick thru these for some ideas that may not have occured to you.
    ========================================

    Some of the suggestions for trying to repair the blank page issue are in here:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4031&highlight=opens+blank+pages

    And because this seems to be related to above and expands on two of the possible issues:
    http://support.microsoft.com/view/tn.asp?kb=168806
    http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q305674&

    Also worth a look and a consideration:
    http://support.microsoft.com/view/tn.asp?kb=281679

    An Aol issue:
    http://support.microsoft.com/view/tn.asp?kb=241344

    A protocal issue:
    http://support.microsoft.com/view/tn.asp?kb=241344

    ==Clarify Please==============
    In the hopes that one of the above issues and fixes may still apply to your problem and repair said same, I offered the above links even while I realize that the focus of this post is the apparent "total lockup " of either IE or OS [not sure], which is accompanied by no error message [not sure] and when resorting to a cntrl/alt/del which either
    pops up [Taskman] which lists IE as "not responding" [not sure]
    may have other non responsive listed appi's such as msgsrv32 [not sure]
    can close IE with "End Task" [not sure]
    or a cntrl/alt/del reboot of OS is only alternative [not sure]

    What version of Windows and IE?
    Did you allow MSCOM "active install" or did you download entire IE install and do a manual install?
    Did you have other applications running in the background while doing this install?
    Do you have other applications running in background?
    Have you tried an IE repair without anything running or open in background?

    ===updated======
    Ooooppps...

    I was actually trying to respond into this "TOPIC" posted by you:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5684

    Seems to be the same IE issue but now I don't know if you sill suffer lockups..... confused....

    NOTE*You may wish to view the AOL link first. I added this when I found myself in this post subsequently I noticed you mentioned that AOL was thrown into the mix.

    Hmmmm....
    As a matter of fact, a reassessment may have to be made, by myself, as I also see other symptoms mentioned in here that were missing in the other post that I was using for my point of reference to address the issue.

    I see you mention a Zone difference. This is or sounds like a security issue with either your options or settings or perhaps you use some sort of Firewall software for protection???. Shoot... AOL firewall may even be the root of the cause, but I am unfamiliar with AOL in any form. Those AOL/IE issues are tricky.

    Let me look around and see what I can come up with as time and desire permits......

    ==Back Again=========
    One snippit I found mentioned that after turning off "antivirus softwares web security and filter" the problem disappeared. This would be related to the ol' HOSTS File problem.
