I am trying to network 2 XP machines. Computer 1 is XP Pro and
ntfs file system. Computer 2 is XP Pro and fat32 file system. Both have the same network info setup and same services running. Both connect to a hub, router and dsl modem. Both have shares selected and both have the firewall disabled. computer 1 can see and access computer 2. Computer 2 can see, but cannot access computer 1. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Make sure you log on to both machines with a username/password.

Either put both username/passwords into local users on each PC (my choice) or enable the guest account on both (Pro has it disabled by default while Home has it enabled).

Enable simple file & print sharing on both (windows explorer~tools~folder options~view and at the bottom on Pro).

I put both username/passwords into local users on each PC and enabled the guest account on both.

Also, enabled simple file & print sharing on both.

Still cant get computer 2 to access computer 1. Do you think having the ntfs on computer 1 is the cause?

No it is not the file system unless you have set special security using the features of NTFS.

Check that the Workgroup is exactly the same on both.

At the command prompt run ipconfig /all on both, what are the differences.

Rt click on the one that does not see the other and click search for computers. Then search for the name of the other computer. The names are unique aren't they?

Do this get back. I am on another project but will check back in a few.

Newt may be back before me.

Is your router the DHCP provider (should be).

Check in Services (both stations) and make sure Network connections is started
    Server is started
    Workstation is started
    Then

    command prompt
    ipconfig /flushdns on both computers

    Uncheck the wins proxy

shut both down and cycle router for 1 minute.

Router back on wait 30 sec or more computers back on!

Ok you are getting your DHCP from the router at 192.168.1.1

so go into services and stop DHCP SERVER and DNS SERVER for both computers. Set both to manual!

There must be some other config that is different!

Do you have internet access on both and does it work?

    On computer 2
    ping 192.168.1.101

    does it get thru?

Again I ask what happens when you search for computers (from 2 )using paygiant?

To do this rt click My network Places search for computers

If the router is providing DHCP and it is, from 192.168.1.1.

Then you do not need another DHCP server what is it serving?

So give me details of what happens, exactly what does it say when you try to access?

I get this when I try to access paygiant...

\\Paygiant is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

I am the only user and I am the administrator .

There is something wrong with the username/password.

Is the administrator password the same on both computers? Exactly the same? On both!

If not make it so! Then log off both and log on to both as administrator. Now try! Should work!

This is a security/permissions problem. The lan itself is working properly!

Hey, it is now working right. Both machines see each other and can access each other! I dontnt know what I did to fix it, but I think this was it. I had a secord hd in computer 1 and I removed it. But I had drives shared on it. I think the system was seeing shares drives that were not there and would not access the
    computer but would see it.

Hey Mike, thanks for all your help I learned a lot from you about networking.
