Have Dell GX620.(XP-Pro-SP3) Love it. All of a sudden -- no "Net ". All systems are go, literally. Everything's fine, no conflicts. Built in E-Card lites. All connections good. Other PC's can "Net ". Re-booted everything. Tried all the normal stuff; msconfig'ed Normal Startup, etc. Got AVAST, Spybot, CCleaner, yada-yada. Bought a new E-Card (Too big for the cabinet). Anyone have any ideas?

    Still "no net "...

I ran "Network Diagnostics ". I highlighted the following: Gateway Diagnostic: Warn; The default gateway is in a different subnet than this computer. Warn; The default gateway is invalid. IP Configuration Diagnostic: Valid IP address detected (lists IP address). Network Adapter Diagnostic: Network connection status: Connected. And finally...HTTP,HTTPS,FTP Diagnostic: Error; Could not detect an HTTP connection. Error; Could not make an HTTPS connection. Error; Couild not make an FTP connection. Everything else seemd to be normal.

Open a command prompt and type the following without the quotes and paste the results back here, "ipconfig /all ".

Are you using ICS or connected directly to the router?

    If connected to the router:
Was your default gateway 192.168.11 or 192.168.1.11?

If not, that’s your problem IF your local routers address is 192.168.1.11.
Run the same ipconfig/all cmd on 1 of your other working computers and find out.

Usually the default address of routers is either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

However – it might be easier if you just did this.
Start - Control Panel - Network Connections – Local Area Connection - Properties –
scroll down and highlight - Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) – Properties.

    And we’re there.

Check: Obtain an IP address automatically
Check: Obtain DNS server address automatically.

Click Advanced - then WINS tab.
    Check: Enable NetBios over TCP/IP

How do I do that? I'm "talking" to you on one PC, and the problem is on my main PC. Can I use a zip-drive? If so,... how?

    Yes, you can.

Open a Notepad file in your zip/usb drive, paste the contents in that file , save it. Now open the same file in your other PC & copy it here.

Ok, your computer is able to find the DHCP server at 192.168.1.1 & also picks up the DNS server at 192.168.1.1 but is not picking up the IP address.

Try to give the IP address [say 192.168.1.250] to your computer manually as follows:

    IP Address : 192.168.1.250
    Gateway : 192.168.1.1
    DNS Server : 192.168.1.1

    See if that works.

If it does & you are able to browse the internet, there could be some problem in your DHCP server which is not handing out the IP addresses.

What kind of gateway are you using ? Is it a router ? Can you get into the Administration page of your gateway ?

SHAZAM! I'm "in. Everything works fine. I've updated all my programs, but I can't access Windows Update. (Using a valid XP). I get the same screen I've been getting, showing that I have no connection. When I troubleshoot it, it shows all is well!? Weird.

I did exactly what you suggested in post # 17. When I did that, she lit up. :)
