I bought a wireless router, and a wireless card for a desktop computer. Hooked up the router to another computer with an ethernet card. Router hooked up to the ethernet card and the DSL router. No startup to the internet. Checked with Dlink, and found they do not allow a static IP address, as required by my DSL provider. DSL provider would not help. They gave me a phone number for DSL router provider. They require $30 just to answer the phone with no guarentee that they can or will help. I understand they have a special card for $150 to install in a slot on the DSL router for wireless. No guarentee that will work. (Give me $180 and I will get back to you, maybe). Yeah right. Never did get the wireless card installed. Still interested in getting two computers, in opposite ends of the house hooked together and to the internet. Any help will be appreciated.

Give us the D Link Model number and the DSL Modem Model number.

And give us your ISP also.

Dlink is an AirPlusG Wireless router Model No. DL-G524.
DSL router is an Actiontec Gateway Model No. R1524SU.
DSL starts with Qwest phone compay.
    ISP is Microsoft Network (MSN).

There lies one of your problems.

The Actiontec is a router. You are doing double routing before you get to the net.

Do not use the WAN port on the D Link. Go into the D Link config and disable DHCP. Set it's IP address to 192.168.0.2 so you can get to the management screen later. Keep a record of this change.

Plug your actiontec directly into a LAN port on the D Link. This will bypass the routing capabuilitys of the D Link.

Will this LAN connection get me around the problem of the Dlink and Actiontec having the same static IP address.
I have heard of Host and Client computers, that have the Wireless router plugged into the Host, with a second Ethernet card. The first ethernet card plugged into the Actiontec Router. Clients hooked to the Wireless with Wireless cards. That would mean no direct connection from Dlink to Actiontec. This talks about Hubs, of which I know nothing. Can the Dlink act as a Hub, or can I get a wireless Hub. Do not know about WAN or LAN connections.

By not using the WAN or Internet Port on the D Link is has become a Hub and a wireless access point.

You will need to change the Dlinks Ip address as I suggested to be able to get to the Wireless management.

Sorry my explinations are so bland. I do this every day and sometimes I assume the person I'm helping already knows these things because they are second nature to me.

Feel free to fire away with the questions.

Maybe this is too much. I do not know where to go for Dlink config to disable DHCP And change the IP address. Then I plug the computers ethernet cord and the DSL routers cord into each LAN port? The other computer, I go wireless. Will have to wait awhile. A friend bought these parts on sale. When the wireless card would not load, and the Dlink did not work, I decided to send them back, later this week. He must have thought Sunday was later this week. Will have him check around to see what he can find. Thanks alot.

:) I have setup this kind of network. For me the best thing to do with this setup is try to figure out what services can your routers give you then try to compare them if your router has firewall ready and VPN then use that to connect to your DSL router then the other router use is as a plain switch or hub. the 2nd router which is a hub must have same network address with your private IP address and the gateway address must be the static Ip address of your 1st Router that is connected with the DSL from here you can now configure your station to use static or dynamic IP adressing. If you configure your 1st Router to have DHCP then just let it obtain the IP address or If it is static then you must put an ip adress that is within the IP adress of your LAN. Then Gateway must be the Static address of the 1st router...
Try this and You can SURF everyday and Everynight :D

Wreckage is one way to Learn....

    OK! Heres where we stand.
I connected computer #1 with an ethernet cord to a LAN port on the Dlink.
Connected Dlink with an ethernet cord from a LAN port to a port on Actiontec.
    Now have internet through Dlink.
Do not have a wireless card for computer #2, that will load the drivers and software. Still working on that. When I get it installed, will let you know what happens.

    Great Job!

Now to get to the config page for the D Link type 192.168.0.1 in your browser.

I think the login is admin admin but I'm not 100% sure. The problem lies that that address may be the same for the Actiotec. If it is just unplug from the Actiontec.

When you get into the D Link change it's address to 192.168.0.2 and turn off DHCP which will be under LAN settings and your good to go!

    Hi Scott Smith!
I tried 192.168.0.2 and no connection.
To get back into Actiontec I had to type 192.168.0.2 in the address bar.
I tried 192.168.0.3 and no connection.
I had to reset Dlink because I could not get back in.
I turned off DHCP and no help.
Got a wireless card and installed on computer #2.
May not be close enough to Dlink, or too many walls and cabinets between them. Will check it out when I get time.
