Googled this problem but didn't find anything that worked. So, I thought I'd get the answers here:).

Anyway, it's my daughter's computer and she brought it to me. When you turn on the computer it goes to the login screen and when I click on an avatar it loads into windows and then immediately logs out. Person 1 has no password and person 2 does. It doesn't matter which one I try it starts into windows then logs out and saves the settings. I tried the recovery console using this info from another website:

Here is the solution to the logon - logoff issue in Windows XP.

    Enter the Recovery Console

Boot the system using the Windows XP CD-ROM. In the first screen when the Setup begins, read the instructions press "R" (in the first screen) enter the Recovery Console. Type-in the built-in Administrator password to enter the Console. You'll see the prompt reading C:\Windows (Or any other drive-letter where you've installed XP)

Type the following command and press Enter.

    CD SYSTEM32
(If that does not work, try CHDIR SYSTEM32)

    COPY USERINIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE

    It did NOT work.

Also, I tried Safe Mode; nada. Tried "Last known good config that worked "; nada.

Not sure if it is caused by a virus, but on one site the person mentioned having this problem after he did a virus scan and anti-spyware scan and rebooted.

My daughter has a virus scanner provided by her local ISP.

    Later. Pepse.

I had the same issue as Pepse, tried the link above and got it working (needed a good couple of hours!)

Had almost given up and nearly went down the format root!

    Thanks for the info!

There is no built in password - any password will have been entered when the OS was first installed unless it was left blank.
