    Hello,

I'm rather new to Win XP and I have a problem. I installed Win XP as administrator on a machine which already has Win98 and Linux (my daughter's). So far I have not needed to log in with a password, but it seem today my computer has locked me out -- there's a "guest" account icon besides the "Administrator "! And I can't log in as administrator! My machine now requires me to log in with a password and I did NOT have a password to begin with! I happen to be the only person to have worked with the machine since XP has been installed. Is there anything I can do about this?

    Many thanks for your response,

    Mia

    question

Did ya create a restore point? If so try & restore to earlier time then the password lock out. There is another solution I'm researching about creating another account blah blah, stand by but please post back if restore worked

    followup

Create a new account in control panel "User ACCOUNTS" Make this an "administrator" with password. reboot, now you can log back on & delete the old administrator account. Only Administrator can delete/remove an account

When you install XP it insists on a password for the admin A/C - doesn't it??

When I was prompted for password during isntalation, I just pressed the Enter key. I thought I would not need the password after all.

Usually if you press Enter at the cretae Admin password stage it creates an Admin account that requires no password - I assume that you just press enter at password prompt and it says pasword incorrect? That would look like someone changed the admin password..

    Mia,

This is all very perplexing "“ having done a spot of research I agree that you can install without an admin password.

Unless set otherwise passwords expire in (I think) 42 days "“ did you install XP about 42 days ago? I wonder if you have been caught in a loop; normally a warning message is displayed advising of this and if the 42 days is up then you are locked out "“ or so it would seem. So despite the fact that you declined a password on install Windows wanted you to change it - even though you haven't got one, but failed to notify you. Cold comfort and probably way off beam.

This is the bad news :

How to Log On to Windows XP If You Forget Your Password or Your Password Expires

"NOTE: If you have not created a password reset disk and you have also forgotten the password for all user accounts, you cannot log on to your existing Windows installation for security reasons. This information applies to starting Windows XP typically, to Safe mode, and to Recovery Console. In this case, you must perform a "clean" installation of Windows XP, re-create all user accounts, and reinstall all of your programs. "

I don’t think there is much point in repairing the installation of XP "“ I doubt it will clear the key passwords. This leaves you but one option "“ re-install.

If you choose this option set a password. When you get to the Windows "˜Out of the Box Experience’ after the final Welcome screen you are prompted to enter a user name "“ do this. You will have three accounts - Admin, User with admin privileges and (by default) no password and a default guest account. For details see http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

I feel sure that there is another way so hang on until someone else chips in on this.

Sorry to spoil your weekend :)
