    Here is the story... I was using NS 4.75 for my mail, then I tried eudora but it kept messing up so I got rid of it. Went back to using NS 4.75 and started getting the postal.dll message- got that corrected thanks to this board.

    But, I am now using incredimail and love it except for one problem. If a click on a mail to: address NS mail wants to open, I have marked incredimail to be my default mail program but NS won't go away. I have marked incredimail in the options of IE and in incrediamail itself but NS still comes back. So I end up having to paste and copy email address after opening incrediamail myself.

    Any ideas on how to get incredimail to be my default mail program instead of NS?

    Thanks
    Stephanie

    Welcome to the Forum, pepsicop!

    Hi Stephanie,

    Try this:

    Close Netscape
    Back up your prefs.js file
    Open Notepad, click on File | Open
    Browse to prefs.js and open the file

    Add these lines to the prefs.js file

    user_pref( "mail.use_altmail ", true);
    user_pref( "mail.use_altmail_for_news ", false);
    user_pref( "mail.altmail_dll ", "incredimail.dll ");

    Let us know if this helps.

    ooops

    Ok, think I messed up... I tried to add those commands but I could not get it to work. There were several user names and I just finally uninstalled NS. But now this had caused me yet another problem (I should have known better)

    Now when I click on a mail to link I get the following message
    Windows can not find Program.exe This program is needed for opening files of type "url:mail to protocol" and then there is a block for me to find Program.exe

    So where do I get it from and where is it supposed to be??

    My next computer I am not loading all these different programs on, there always seems to be something that messes things up.

    Thanks again,
    Stephanie

    Stephanie,

    Open Windows Explorer / View / Options / File Types

    Find URL:MailTo Protocol

    What program does the File Type point to?

    Are you using IE now, and if so what version?
    In IE5, go to Tools/ Internet Options / Programs / E-mail
    You should be able to select the application used for your mailto link there.

    I ran the power clean in McAfee and cleaned up things and now when I click on the mail to link in an email I have, wow... it open to many IE windows to count.

    Hi Stephanie,

    Did you change the settings in IE to reflect Incredimail as your Email program?

    Have you tried to manually make incredimail your default mail client? If you go to the tools menu/options/general tab there is a button to make incredimail the default mail client. However, you may have tried this already. Additionally, have you considered reinstalling, as sometimes that works to reset things with windows programs. Sometimes even setting another program as the default, then changing to your desired program will work.

    As a last, final resort, you might consider the URL:MailTo Protocol addition that Ramona had mentioned...

    IE has incredimail set as the default and so does incrediamail itself. It always has and I have even tried to apply it again. I was thinking of downloading netscape again and see what happens, what do you all think?

    Oh by the way I am using IE 6.0 and the premium version of incrediamail but the freebie incredimail did the same thing.

    Hi Stephanie,

    I wouldn't try reinstalling Netscape yet. I would follow tranquilo's suggestion to reinstall Incredimail. Once you have done so, then the use the Option in the Incredimail program to set it as your default Mail program.

    Hopefully that will solve the problem.

    If that doesn't work, reinstalling netscape, setting it as the default mailer, then setting incredimail as the default mailer, then properly uninstalling netscape may work. Hopefully it won't take too long to download netscape... ;)
