My computer recently got a very powerful virus. I fought the virus but it just wouldn't die so in the end I decided to re-install XP to get rid of it. When I tried this the windows CD gave an error (listed below). Then just to make sure that the virus wasn't playing with the CD's installation ability, I used ERD Commander to wipe the harddrive clean (4 pass overwrite). Then after I tried the installation again I just recieved the same error (listed below).

The installation for windows would go and load the files, and etc. Then it would say "Starting Windows" and then Blue Screen of Death me before anything else happened.

    The BSOD said:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message , disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:

    ***STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF76450BF, 0xF7A91208, 0xF7A90F08)

    *** pci.sys - Address F76450BF base at F763E000, DateStamp 3b7d855c

Also the virus kept trying to access the internet. ZoneAlarm kept alerting me that tmp***.exe was trying to access the internet.

*** was replaced by many different letters and numbers

It also kept making the page I was clicking on (internet) redirect somewhere random.

    PLEASE HELP!!!

You should delete all partitions and then remake one or more using your XP CD. Then, try your installation. You can reference this knowledge base article if it happens again.

"Starting windows" is what the windows installer says after it loads the files, but before it can install or do anything...

    sry for the confusion

    Thanks a lot Arie...

The Slipstreaming worked out well, and I don't have to install the Service Pack now.

    Thanks again.
