I am running Windows XP on my Compaq laptop and used Partition Magic to partition off 10 GB into which I'd like to install Windows 2000 to use as a fax server. I have an old Windows 2000 CD which does not include SP4. When trying to install it, I am getting the message, paraphrasing, that my current windows system is newer than the one I want to install into the partition and that therefore the installation has been disabled. Is there anyway to get around it? Obviously I have to download SP4 also and install it once I get Windows 2000 into the partition.

If you start and carry out the install by booting the computer from the CD, then you will not get this problem. This is a full walk-through of the procedure http://www.windowsreinstall.com/windows2000/installoldhdd/multipage1.htm
Just adapt the part about which partition you want 2K to install to. This guide explains how to delete the current partition and start afresh. You just want to point 2K to install to the 10gig partition you have already created.

However, there is a specific issue with installing 2K after XP that you need to deal with once 2K is up and running. The XP boot files will be replace with the 2K ones, which can’t boot XP. You need to make copies of the two hidden files in the root of XP "˜ntldr’ and "˜ntdetect.com’ before you start the 2K install. Once you are booted into 2K then replace both those files currently in the root of XP with the copies you made.
I don’t know your experience level so if that’s not clear enough just say and I’ll expand.

Alternatively, if you want to use your own third party boot manager instead of letting Windows set up it’s own dual boot system, then you will need to proceed completely differenty.

The other possible issue would be installing a pre service pack copy of 2K onto a hard drive that was larger than 137gig. If your laptop hard drive is larger than this you will need to slipstream SP4 into the 2K CD before it would be safe or probably even possible to install it.
