I am repairing a computer which has Win 98 upgrade installed, and the owner wants a password setup on the startup screen. There was no password setup when the original Win 95 was installed, or later when when it was upgraded to Win 98. When I go to "Change password ", the original shows up as a blank field, so we insert the required password in the New Password field. The system then spits the dummy out saying that the original password is incorrect. How can this be so, when there was no original password. How can we get around this and setup a password. Any ideas please????????

It's pretty much not worth setting up a password in Win98. All you have to do is click cancel or hit the escape key and the pc will boot up.

Might consider adding a password in the BIOS.

Use Start\Find\Files or folders\ and search for *.pwl. Delete them and reboot. When the networking logon screen appears you can type in the username and pasword you want and windows will remember it next time logging on.

    Steve,
I would not worry about a password either, but the owner wants one.

    Tony,
I will try your suggestion, and let you know how it goes.

Many thanks gentlemen. Have a good day.
