Trying to install Fax Services via Add/Remove Windows Components but after getting message to specify where to find file "zClientm.ex_" on CD in i386 folder, get message "Setup cannot copy the file "zClientm.ex_ ".

The file is certainly in the i386 folder because it gives me the option to select it and it appears in the "locate file" box but when going to retry get the "Setup cannot copy the file "zClientm.ex_" continuously.

    Am I doing something wrong?

I have installed the fax service, but you may want to check that the default services are running, especially if you have changed any of them. I am not sure if Cryptograhic Service needs to be running, but for most MS OS installations and updates, it is necessary.

The default service configuration can be found in the Services Help file or here:

    http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

The other possibility that comes to mind is a scratch on the CD.

Crypto service is running. Disk is oK. In fact, I copied the i386 file to a hard drive and get the same message when trying to install from there.

This problem seems to be occurring to people who have uninstalled some part of the original operating system, like the Windows Messenger, for one. It occurs also when trying to install IIS, sometimes ZoneAlarm, and causes problems with the MS gaming zone.

The problems are seemingly identical to yours. Even with the file visible or copied to the drive, it still cannot be copied.

Another common antecedent was the changing of drive letters. It seems the old drive letter is sought.

None of this is much help, of course, but it appears that something is protecting that file. You could try a selective startup to see if you can narrow down what you actually need to have running to install, and possibly what you need to stop to allow copying.

You might try going into Safe Mode and deleting all instances of the file (or at least moving it to an outside folder).

Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com will give you information on what that file is doing.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
