I can write and receive text on Messenger, but cannot initiate a conversation. I am running Windows 98 with 256 MEGs of memory using a SoundBlaster SB PCI128 duplex sound card, I am not behind a firewall, have tested the mike and speakers and have used other PC2PC telephony programs successfully with my rig. The bars next to the Speaker and Microphone in the window do not register, which is also the case with the other party with whom I am attempting to establish voice contact. The other party successfully uses voice with other parties, so the problem must be at my end. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

To set sound preferences for MSN Instant Messenger, open IM and select Tools/Options/Preferences. If you use MSN IM, this should do the trick for you.

Thank you for the reply, to which I have been slow to reply because of being on a business trip. I need some additional guidance. In essence, when I go to Tools, Options, Preferences and then Sounds, I don't know what to do next. I see the list of place and sounds, but what steps should I take to activate sound for Messenger's telephony capabilities?
