    Hello All,
I stored (Exported) all of my OE5 mail folders onto a floppy disc before doing a reformat & reloading W98se...Now I'm trying to import these mail folders back to OE5 but error message says... "Cannot Find Files In This Folder Or Another Application Is Running That Has The Required Files Open "
I did a search of of past posts for a problem like this but was unable to apply any of information I found to solve my problem. :(

    Regards,
    J. M.

    JM,

A couple or things you might try .............

    1. Copy the files to HD and try import from there.

    2. Navigate to the default storage location for the 'new' OE5 message store. Think they are *.mbx files (or similar) rather than *.dbx of later versions of OE. Rename them inboxold, etc, then copy and paste your saved OE folders into that location.

If that fails simply delete the pasted files and rename the 'old' files to what they were before and look here

Thanks for your post Pete, but still can't import the old mail, even from hard drive.

I tried to navigate to mail storage area using Windows Explorer but came up empty...I tried the "Find Files or Folder" option using *.mbx & also tried *.dbx as well but no luck...To be honest with you I have no idea how to find this folder...You would think the address book would be the hard one to import but I whipped that!

I tried the link you posted but no luck there either.

    Regards,

Managed to find a copy of OE 5 on my other m/c - we are talking *.dbx files

In Windows Explorer go to Folder Options > View > Show hidden files and folders.

Then search for *.dbx - they are in C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{.............}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Alternatively in OE Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder - clicking on this will reveal the store location.

If you copy your *.dbx files to a folder on your HD you can point OE there.

    Hello Pete,
I managed to find the *.dbx files in Windows Explorer but the old mail I copied to HD is .EML files...How do I change these over to .dbx files?

OK - so I guess you copied your emails to floppy rather than copying the *.dbx folders to floppy?

I cannot find a way of inserting them en masse into OE, but it can be done individually :

Double click *.eml file > file opens in OE
File > Move to Folder > select folder > OK inserts that email into the OE *.dbx folder.

Must be a better way - try a new thread along the lines of 'Import *.eml files into OE?'

    Hello Pete,
I used/ File/ Export/ Messages... to move my mail to a floppy disc...I had no idea you couldn't reverse the process by using File/ Import/ Messages... I tried to make a .dbx file using the info & links you posted, just to see if I could do it, but I could not get any results for some reason...But, anyway, I opened the mail I stored last week like you said to do & then I managed to move them to the correct "inboxes ", etc. I could only move one at a time but, hey, it worked! (why didn't I think of that  ) Maybe I'll start a new thread like you say, (importing .eml files to OE5)...Thanks a bunch for your advice.

You're welcome - glad to hear you got there in the end - even if it was a little long winded :)
