The only time I ever hear sound is when I connect to the internet. I hear the dial up sounds and that is it. When ever I play a game, run a program, or even use my call wave I have no sound. I have gone to settings control panel and done everything windows help said to do and yet still I can not get any other sound besides the dial up. I can however put a music c.d. in to my c.d. rom and get the music if I have head phones on but I can't hear anything from my speakers I have plugged into the computer. But as far as games or anything else that should have sound it doesn't even with head phones. I have a fairly old computer it is a Gateway 2000 P5-100 with just a pentium processor. Not petium I not pentium II or Pentium III just a pentium. Is there anything I can do to get the sound to work on this old thing? Thank you for taking the time to read this. And if you can help thanks in advance.:)

The screeching sounds that you hear when you connect to the internet come through the small PC speaker built into the computer, and do not come through your sound system.

In ControlPanel/System tab, can you see the sound devices ?
If so, any yellow exclamation marks over them ?
If you right click them/properties are they displayed as working properly ?
Apart from the latest drivers, it may simply be that the card has become unseated.
    regards

I tried all the control panel stuff I have no yellow exclamation next to any thing. The only thing I have where the sound card is supposed to be is Something called A crreative sound blaster 16 plug and play . Is that my sound card?

    Yes it is.

    Try this:
go into Device Manager, look for an OTHER category (contains unknown devices) and remove any devices listed . Don't reboot yet. then go to the Sound Video and Game Controllers category and remove the audio device(s) . Reboot, See if Windows reinstalls the drivers. If you are asked for a disk, insert your Win98 CD Rom

You can also try downloading new drivers.

Either enter your serial number on the link I gave before to search for drivers specific to your system, or you can try this download I found:

    http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?ref=undefined&id=14172
(make sure you read the :how to install" information)
    7502152.exe Sound Blaster 16x driver, version 4.36.13
Release Date: 9/1/1999 File Size: 4535 KB Download Time: 11 min @ 56K
    Operating Systems:
    Windows 98 Windows 95
    Parts Supported:
6000642 - Sound Blaster Sound Card

    EDIT:

A couple of other things to try before reinstalling your audio drivers, in case you haven't tried them:

    Open the Windows Volume Control

    - If you have a "yellow speaker" icon in your taskbar:
Right-Click on that yellow speaker > Click Open Volume Control

    - If you don't have a "yellow speaker" icon in your taskbar:
Click Start > Click Run > Type SNDVOL32 > Click OK

    Check to make sure that:
    - All the mixer volume levels ( "slide bars ") are high enough
    - That none of the MUTE boxes have checks in them

Control Panel > Multimedia, on the Audio tab
(or Right-Click on that yellow speaker > Click Adjust Audio Properties)

Try changing the preferred device in playback if you have a choice. Make sure you make a note of the original setting so you can set it back.

The Gateway site>http://support.gateway.com/support/<also makes available a Gateway update utility that will scan your PC and provide a remove old driver/install new driver service.Good luck.
