 I recently got a HP Pavillion 322n running windows XP - I am VERY pleased with the computer and windows XP - but cannot format or read a 3.5" floppy ????
Device manager says all fine - but when i try reading a floppy the lite comes on FOREVER - and finally I get the msg that the disc is not formatted and would I like to format - of course I say yes - but then get the msg that the disc could not be formatted !?!
Several times I got the msg " Windows unable to complete the format "
    Appreciate any help !!willow@texas.usa.com

A couple of things first come to hand... A faulty drive, or oxide build-up in the read/write head. If the computer is new it's unlikely the head is dirty, but still could be a faulty drive?

Without risking the warranty, if it's under warranty? I'd uninstall the floppy in the device manager remove the cover of the PC and reseat the ribbon cable in the back of the drive as well as on the motherboard socket. Power the PC back up and let windows detect and install the drive, and try reading/writing to it.

This nasty problem surfaces again

    Check this thread out:

See if HP can shed any light on this, if so, post back their answer because many people are having this problem (me included)

How about it Arie, it would be nice to read any comments you may have on this ongoing problem with XP and floppy drives.

I have been following this thing for months now.
