I don't know what happened but I was reconnecting my DVD burner and my CD burner (on different occassions) and neither one shows up in "My Computer ". When I did a check on it, it says:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Now, I have the disk ot reload the driver (or the whole application) but without the ROM there is nothing I can do. Or is it? I want to do a clean install of XP again but want to save my files. But, without the ROM working I can't do neither.

I can't even find the drivers online.

    Any advice would help!!

I would borrow or buy a new one first to see if it worked. i keep 2 cd-rom, 2 floppy's & 2 HD's to check machines i work on. you may trying uninstalling the drivers and tell the machine your going to add hardware unplug and reconect the cd. then you would know you had good connection, or did you check the connections already. did you trouble shoot in properties

    error 39

while checking on how to fix this i was in device manager. i found a ? so i checked properties said it would not start code 10? so i uninstalled it restarted then i had code 39. i went to dell ran scan downloaded wireless driver "only thing that it said i needed" had one critical update from msft. that required restart. then no 39 problems. 39 is that 39 related ? or did it just find it on restart ?
