I want to enable "Automatically check for solutions" (in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Action Center\Problem Reporting Settings) but it's grayed out and I can't change it. The error message says "Some settings are controlled by Group Policy" and that they can't be changed unless done so by a system administrator. However, I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium on a single, non-networked PC and (I understand that) there is no Group Policy editor, and I'm using an administrator account.

How can I enable "Automatically check for solutions "?

Update: I just discovered that in my computer's Services there is a Group Policy Client (that's a surprise to me), and in the Group Policy Client Properties (Local Computer) dialog box the Startup type is set to Automatic and the service is Started, and that all these settings are grayed out and unavailable for me to change.

Can anyone help me figure out how I can break out of this setup?

Sorry, I didn't realize that this would be such a knotty problem.

I'm not clear on whether you've already accessed this but if you haven't:
In Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Action Center, in the left-hand pane, click on "Change Action Center Settings. "

In the window that opens, click on "Problem reporting settings. "

In the window that opens, make the changes you want, including settings for "All Users," click OK when done.

    Miz, thanks for your reply.
That's exactly the dialog box that I'm having the problem with. I see the following message in a pale yellow box: "Some setting are controlled by Group Policy." Then there are four options below, all grayed out, but the following one is pre-selected: "Never check for solutions (not recommended)" There is no way to unselect it. It's driving me up the wall. I know I could ask the Action Center to check for solutions before, but not anymore.

When you get to the window where the options are greyed out, click on "Change report settings for all users. "

In that window, enable "Allow each user to change settings" or whatever option you prefer, click OK.

You should then be able to set it up the way you want it for your account.

Edit: If you choose anything other than "Allow each user....," the options will stay greyed out in the previous window.

Miz, this may sound screwy, but the only options I can select on this window are:
"Select programs to exclude from reporting" and
"Read the Windows Error Reporting privacy statement "

I wish I could send you a screenshot, but I don't know how to do that.

The only idea I have left is to check in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services and see if "Windows Error Reporting Service" is started.

If not, or if it's set on Manual, double click it and in the window that opens, click the Start button.

After the service has started, check to see if you can then change any settings back in the Error Reporting Settings window.

Miz, the Windows Error Reporting Service was set to manual and it was not started, so as you advised, I started it. However, it made no difference to the "Change report settings for all users," which is still grayed out, as are all the other options. And no help is offered. How can Windows 7, which is so smart in so many other respects, be so "dumb" in this one? :(

Miz, I went further and ran the sfc /scannow command and that said it didn't fix some files, but I should look in the log file (sfcdetails.txt) to figure out which ones weren't fixed, which I did, but I can't make head or tails out of it. Would it be of any value to post the contents of that file here?

    Frank

I took the liberty of doing just that. Here is the pertinent part of that file:

I won't be able to do much with it but someone else may be able to analyze it.

I'm out of ideas but someone else may have the answer.

That a GP Client is there is normal, I also think it is normal you can't stop this service (I currently don't have Home Premium installed. I'll install it in a VM & check for you in the next few days).

    Arie,

Some articles I've read say that the Gpedit comes only with the upper two editions of Win7; others say it's normal for Gpedit to be there in Home Premium (which I have). It seems to be split both ways.

I realize that if Gpedit is there, it's going to have its way and not allow me to play around with it.

But my problem is: how to enable "Automatically check for solutions (recommended)." After all, if Windows recommends it, then why doesn't it allow for it to be turned on?

How about if I go into Safe Mode and delete the gpedit.dll?

    Frank

PS: As you can see from the sfcdetails.txt file, the Windows System File Checker say that this file and its associates are corrupt.

I found a site that says something called "Soluto" will disable Windows' error reporting. It's software that's supposed to handle crashes if it can't forestall them

If you don't have that particular program installed, it is an indication that software...possibly malware, possibly antivirus or antimalware...can be the cause of the problem you're having.

Look through what's running in Task Manager>Services for likely suspects. If you find something, temporarily disable it or stop it through Task Manager, check in the Action Center to see if that fixed it.

If it's software, it's a matter of trial and error to pinpoint which program is the culprit.

Miz, I have had Soluto installed and running for about the past year. Are you suggesting that I uninstall the program, or just stop it from running? I've turned it off, but there's no change in the "check for solutions" window.

    This from the Soluto fourm:
...as part of the new Crash feature, Soluto takes over handling crashes from Windows :)

If you don't like Soluto's crash handling, and want to go back to the old Windows "Send error report" - you can disable this feature by right clicking the tray icon - Advanced - un-tick the "Enable Soluto Crash Handler" feature.

Miz, as you can see from this screenshot (http://gyazo.com/504eb830dfac563b91ddb0c8a5ace233), disabling Soluto's Crash Handler feature had made no difference to my "check for solutions" problem. :(

Did you reboot after the disable? It probably loaded on startup and will take a restart to get it completely unloaded.

If that doesn't fix it, I suggest you post over in the Soluto forum I linked to in my last post. They may have the answer.
