    LS,

Something I got used to and which I loved to do. While browsing (IE6) I sometimes encounter URL's and links at which I want to have a look later on I use my desktop as a parking lot.
Picking up the link and dragging it to my desktop always worked fine. I don't know what happened but all of a sudden it was over.
Something I don't do often is that you can do that also with an e_mail from OE; that stopped working too.
What's still possible is dragging from Explorer and all the other options to have icons placed/copied to the desktop.

I digged all helps and registry to find an option to deal with that problem and found nothing, so I end up here.

    Thx
    Ben

I understand that you are unable to drag and drop a link from a web page or email message to your desktop. In trying to find an answer I was wondering if you have the ability to right click on the link, select Copy Shortcut from the pop-up menu, go to your Desktop, right click again and select Paste Shortcut?

Also have you tried using System Restore and choosing a restore point prior to when this began to occur?

    Hi Rod,

I can't go back with restore, I don't know exactly when the problem was introduced. You know how it goes I'm using this method sometimes a couple of times a day and the not for weeks. To much has happened on my system in the meantime I can't afort loosing that.

The copy/paste shortcut option you are mentioning I didn't about. Well that isn't available on the address input line of IE, but indeed on all the links on the page itself. So I tried it, well copy works, but pasting it onto the desktop, causes Explorer to produce an error for which I am invited to report it to MS, besides I'm loosing some tray icons too which is typical when your desktop crashes.

    regards,
    Ben

Have you tried doing a repair of IE?

Also - couldn't hurt to force a chkdsk /f. Just open a DOS window, put in that command, and when it fails, answer Yes to doing it at next reboot.

It sounds as if you have some corrupted files in either IE and/or Windows. The repair procedures for these is dependent on the version of IE and Windows you are using. There are several posts on this BBS concerning repairing or reinstalling IE6 as well as the different versions of Windows.

To find these posts open a search window by clicking on the search button above and typing REPAIR in the Search by Keyword window. You can Search in All Open Forums, or select just IE/OE or Windows XP. If you search in All Open Threads you will receive a considerable number of results, so you might want to do to two searches, one using IE6 and another using Windows XP.

    HTH. :)

After posting my last response I found the following link that I thought you might be interested in checking out. It contains registry patches that you can download. I noticed that there is a patch entitled "Drag & Drop Fix - Windows XP.

    Well I did some homework.

Despite the many references to "REPAIR" IE/OE/XP I was not able to repair. I presume I have to go to Control Panel/Software/ Add Remove Window Components because that's the only place I find IE. Clicking that one it starts asking for my XP Home CD and starts telling me it can't find a couple of files on that CD, strange...

Instead of that I supplied the registry patch, (great hunting by the way). That one unfortunately didn't help.

To be sure about my system files I ran SFC and indeed some files were replaced (Now I hope that the software which made the changes is still working, but that's something to worry about later on). This also didn't help.

In the meantime I found another funny behaviour of my system. (I'm not sure whether this might be related to my problem). If I explore the "Start Button/program-files" or any other map within Explorer then I get what I want (An Explorer window opens). But if I open the start menu/program-files and rightclick a map to choose Explore then I get a "move file to -browser menu "; I can ignore that then I get a "Copy to -browser menu "; ignoring that one I finally get the requested explorer window.

Somehow I'm getting the feeling that the registry got "sick ".

    regards,
    Ben
