All of a sudden I can't download with NS 7.1 (I'm using Win XP)

A few days ago I downloaded Norton Anti Virus definitions from their site using NS 7.1 and everything worked. Today I tried downloading and nothing happens. I try to look at Download Manager but it doesn't seem to exist. Nothing happens when I try calling it from the menu, and I don't know where to find it.

    Anybody know what's going on?

    Hi xelaw,

    First try the basic cleanup:

    Tools | Download Manager
    Highlight all files (CTRL+A)
Click the "Remove from List" tab

    Clear the Cache
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Cache

    Close Netscape and Quick Launch
Do a Windows "Find" for *.tmp
    Delete all files

Start Netscape and try to download a file. Let us know if this helps.

Ramona, thanks for the quick reply. But as I stated in my post, I can't see Download Manager; if I click on Tools|Download Manager, absolutely nothing happens. Also if I try to "Save Page as..." absolutely nothing happens - the "Save as" window appears, I press save, but the page is not saved.

I closed Netscape ans sent a bunch of *.tmp files to the recycle bin, but there was no change.

There is no problem downloading files or saving pages with IE.

    Hi xelaw,

Let's try deleting some more files then:
With Netscape and Quick Launch closed:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\components folder:
    Delete: compreg.dat

    Next:
Navigate to the salted (*.slt) folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt

    Delete: downloads.rdf
    Delete: history.dat
    Delete: XUL.mfl

Let us know if any of the above solve your download problem.

    Ramona, I thank you again.

I deleted the four files you mentioned, and now I have Download Nanager (empty, but that's not a great loss) back, and I can download files and save web pages. Great!

Do you have any idea what causes the problem? Can I expect it to recur?

    Thanks

    Hi xelaw,

Glad to hear that you can now download.

If your problem was a corrupt compreg.dat file, then deleting the file and letting Netscape rebuild, was the fix. This could recur. It has been fixed in Mozilla 1.6. See this Bug:
    http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=203689

    Another cause:
Most problems with Netscape 7.1 stem from installing over, rather than uninstalling via the Add/Remove Programs applet. Netscape 7.1 files are not compatible with older versions, therefore problems arise when you don't uninstall the existing version properly.

Good preventive maintenance is to keep the Download Manager file list either empty, or to a minimum.

Take a look at this page I have on: Unable to Download
