Can't Download NS 7.1

    Why can't I download Netscape 7.1 (newest version) from the download page???

    Everytime I try to download the newest version of NS, I receive a NSsetup.exe.jpg file that will not open? This occurs whether I go out and request the download or I receive a NS notice that it's available and try and download it.

    I am on W98SE, have NS 7.02, I save the download to My Docs folder, I had no trouble going to NS7.02 from the CD. When I double click the exe file, a Windows program opens and says it can not open the jpg file.

    Any suggestions? Is the newest version worth it?

    Tranquilo,
    The first two sites give the same results. It's saved as an image file (jpg) and MS Photo Editor says it can't find the file or can't open it. Same result even if I change the file type to be saved as "All Files ".

    From the other two sites, which do I want for a full upgrade? I presume the SSetup-Full.exe file?

    The base install only includes the browser, while the full install include everything (browser, mail, etc).

    If it still doesn't work, you can try renaming your mimeTypes.rdf file to mimeTypes.old, and restarting netscape. Alternatively, you can make a new profile, and transfer all your personal files from the old profile to the new.

    I believe it's recommended to uninstall netscape 7.02 before installing 7.1. Regardless, just be sure to back up your profile before you upgrade... ;)

    Before uninstalling, you might also try this workaround, in addition to renaming the mimeTypes.rdf file:

    Check Edit | Preferences | Navigator | Helper Applications
    Look for an octet-stream listing
    Verify that the extension type is ".jpg "
    Delete it
