    Hi

I've just had a massive problem with a worm, which shut down my antivirus. The worm is now gone but have a larger problem....

Every single program on my HDD is not unaccessible. Whenever I click on a program or on the .exe itself it says "Windows cannot find c:\blah blah blah, make sure you typed the name correctly etc. etc. "

However, if I open a doc, for example a word document, Microsoft Word OPENS it!!!!

So I think the file which was removed with the worm (a system file in c:\windows\system32) controlled the opening of exe's somehow?

I know this is a bit of a vague question, but is anyone aware of the file the antivirus removed so I can put it back?!

It was in system32, began with r and was an exe file.

Any help, GREATLY appreciated, Internet Explorer is the only app still working. Control Panel cant be found either (rundll32.exe is missing, although I have reinstalled it!)

    Thanks.

    Solved!

Sorry for that, I've actually just realised what was causing it...

    Panicing DOESNT help.

for anyone else who has this problem. It's a chance that it could be a mild alteration in the registry, for exe files.

In my case I downloaded fixreg.com which is a great little app for fixing the registry.

    This solved the problem.

    Thankyou though guys and gals.

    fixreg info as requested

    Hi,

All I know is that I found a site at grisoft which has the fixreg program in it, and it worked!

It simply found a line in the registry which altered the state of the way exe files were accessed. Whether this was a wormleftover or not I cannot say, but the program fixed the issue in 2 seconds flat.

thanks for your help gang, it really was appreciated....

And SORRY for the double post! I was panicing and wasn't entirely sure whether it was a Windows XP issue or Virus/Worm!!!!

    Cheers.
