I was clearing my HD of leftover files and i found a folder called: ff852297c49. It's 213mb big and contains just under a thousand files (exe's, dll's, web pages). It doesn't seem to be for any program i have but when i try to access folders inside it, it tells me i don't have permission. Deleting it doesn't work either. I get the message saying the file is in use or is write protected. My system isn't slow at all but it is taking up quite a lot of space for no reason. Doesn't nyone know whether it is legit or not?

    Thanks
    Alex

I found a Microsoft Agent Character File inside called "Earl" with a picture of a cat on. Is it smiling because it's making a mockery of me?

    Hello Alex,

What is the created date? Does that ring a bell? How about the files within: modified dates and any info cleaned from properties.

What I would do is try to copy it to either a different drive or partition or burn it out and then in safe mode try to delete it. If safe mode doesn't work then use Move on Boot http://www.snapfiles.com/get/moveonboot.html Adds a context menu item, target the file/folder and re-boot.

EDIT: Forgot to mention to make a System Restore point prior the deletion attempt just is case.

I would also make use of the on-line scanners linked in Quick Links > Recommended Links at the top of this page.

    Regards - Charles

Won't be moved, deleted, copied or even burnt to a disc. I don't want to try deleting yet until i know what it is. It may be a legit program (but i doubt it).

What's the full path to the folder? Was the folder created the same time you installed MS Office by any chance?

It tried taking permission however i get the message "You do not have permission to view or edit the current permission setting for <<file name>> ". I have tried taking ownership but i still cannot do anything. I found an installation file called webfldrs.msi, i looked through google for it and found a lot of pages about Windows update for service pack 1. Still i cannot do anything with the files or folders inside.

When hotfixes (Windows Update) are installed, files are extracted to a temporary folder, created by the installer. The folder name is a random series of letters and digits. On a computer with multiple partitions, the folder gets created on a different partition ( e.g. D: ) than the system partition ( C: ) but if the computer only has a single partition ( C: ) the folder will get created there. It should get deleted when the installation of the hotfix is completed but maybe on Your computer, on one occasion, it didn't get deleted.

    Just a thought,
    Christer

I think Christer may be right, so it should be safe to delete using "moveonboot "?
