I have 2 directories or folders that I want to delete. They are both in Program Files.
One is "xerox ". I do not have any software on the computer from xerox. I can only delete it in safe mode then it comes back in normal mode.
The other is "msn gaming zone ". I do not use this but it also comes back after deleting.

The xerox folder is not deletable thanks to MS. It's a standard with XP and I suspect an oversight in programming left it orphaned.

The other one is likely from some game site that you visit regularly but I'm guessing. Perhaps even playing some internet based game creates it.

I don't do games. I am a day trader and while I sit here I snoop around and find things that I don't need. What I usually do is change the name and leave it that way for several days before deleting but not these directories. I can't even change the names. So I deleted them in safe mode and they came back as soon as I rebooted.

    Hi OldSalty,
While there are methods for removing these, they are considered hacks. As hacks the results and consequences will vary. While you may succeed at removing these the consequences for doing so may not rear it's ugly head until further down the road. These folders are expected to be there with files in tact. If they are not shared by now with something else, they may be needed or used by some software or site you need later down the road. "System hidden ", "Super hidden" and "read only" files are marked with these attributes for a reason. If your truly cramped for space look for the "known to be safe" files, folders, programs and tweaks and use these before you start planting and setting mine fields for yourself.

If you cannot spare the 8 MB that is in these 2 folders altogether (mostly in the MSN GAming Zone dir) you are in more trouble than removing that folder will help. You would need a new hard disk drive or additional one at least.

I say if it aint broke dont fix it.......pretend it doesnt exist. Make it a hidden folder and then hide your folders in the folder options if you cant stand to look at it.
    :D

Nothing in either of mine..never has been. I just always figured it was some sort of sweetheart deal to favor Xerox or MS. I worry more about the embedding of other things not so obvious but even that doesn't keep me awake nights. ;)

The xerox dir can be removed. I found another mvp who wrote this about it:

It is the default Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) device driver included in Windows XP for Xerox scanners. The Xerox WIA driver for Ms WinXP provides users with a method to quickly scan jobs at their Xerox multifunction devices and retrieves the images at their PC desktop. The WIA driver enables scanning without the use of a scan server. the WIA driver automaticallly creates a scan template on the Xerox device that points to a folder on the WinXP workstation.

There are two Xerox WIA drivers exist for scanning to the Xerox multifunction devices:
-- Windows XP WIA Driver for the WorkCentre Pro Scanners
-- Windows XP WIA Driver for Xerox Network Scanners (for the Document Centre)

The setup file of the WIA of Xerox network scanner is at C:\windows\INF, where C is installed WinXP system
    XSCAN_XP.INF
    XSCAN_XP.PNF

It will run the Xerox Scanner Daemon by copying three files to \windows\system.
    xrxwiadr.dll
    xrxscnui.dll
    xrxwbtmp.dll

and two executables files to \Programs\Xerox\NWWia
    XrxFTPLt.exe
    xrxflnch.exe

It will add in the registry, especially
    HKLM, Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    HKLM, Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
    HKCU, Software\Xerox\NetworkWIA

Xerox network scanner within the local area network is using the FTP protocol to scan a file to a Windows Workstation.
The scanned document is saved in a folder and can be used to publish to the website.
C:\Program Files\microsoft frontpage\version3.0\bin will be used to store the scanned files temporary.
Normally, the scanned document is saved in My Document of the local user.
The local user will use and logon to the scan template with password and start scanning from the Xerox scanner in the network.

For uninstallation, you need to check with the Control Panel, Scanners and Cameras, uninstall the WIA driver.
make sure you have administrative rights to the system.
Go to the registry key, remove, if it still exists.
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run XrxFTPLt.exe
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce xrxflnch.exe
    HKCU\Software\Xerox\NetworkWIA

Make certain those 5 files mentioned above are removed respectively after uninstallation of the WIA driver.

Here is details of Xerox WIA driver.
