I am running Outlook Express 6 on a new lap top, I can't create a new folder for my inbox or anywhere. I right click on inbox and select new folder but nothing happens. I have tried selecting File and new folder but still nothing happens, also Ctrl+Shft+E does nothing.
It all works ok in Windows Explorer

    1. On the OE Tools menu, click Options.
    2. On the Maintenance tab, click Store Folder.
    3. Select the folder location, and then press CTRL+C to copy the location.
    4. Click Cancel, and then click Cancel again to close the dialog box.
    5. Click Start, and then click Run.
    6. In the Open box, press CTRL+V, and then click OK.

Do you see a Folder called New Folder?

The box to create the new folder (the one asking for the name) doesn't pop up?

Bill, I have tried your suggestion which does create a new folder but not in outlook express.

Steve, that is right the box does not pop up.

The thing is, the process I gave above does not create anything. It simply calls explorer pointing at your OE data store folder.

If "New Folder" is there, try renaming it to something usefull, then see if it now appears in OE.

No, I have to go into file and folder tasks in the box that pops up after the ctrl V in Run and then make a new folder but it does not have a .dbx extension

See the discussion of folder.dbx corruption.
    Try the compaction step discussed.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx

    Then,

    Start, Run, cmd

    MSIMN.EXE /REG
    regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msoe.dll "
    regsvr32 urlmon.dll
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 browseui.dll
    regsvr32 msjava.dl
    regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

    (ignore any error messages)

    reboot and test.

Bill, I have compacted the folders ok but when I do the command msimn.exe /reg I get the message 'msimn.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file' so I was reluctant to try the other commands.

I did a search for msimn.exe and found it in program files/outlook express so I changed directory to that and it ran ok I then ran the other commands all of which ran without error messages but after a reboot I still cannot create a new folder. No pop up box appears after clicking new folder.

Is your mail service IMAP or POP3?

The issue would be from IMAP mail servers, if there was an issue from the mail server side of things.

A suggestion by Bruce Hagen, MS-MVP OE:

You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it.
If all is well, you can import your messages from the old identity and
    delete it.

How to Create and Use Identities in Outlook Express
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=209169

Several AV programs can cause this. Norton AV (not Corporate) and McAfee (Dell) Security
Center, are two that have been identified.

My laptop is a Dell and it does have Macafee Security Centre installed on it. Is there anything I can do as Dell says Macafee is a seperate company and has nothing to do with Dell.
