I just upgraded my computer to vista,
and cannot connect to the internet.
it asks for the ISP user name and password,
so i keep putting in "domain "@neo.rr.com for my user name
    but it won't work.
    How would you fix it?

    What program are you using?

    Are you using

    Start/Control Panel/Network and Sharing Center/Connect to a Network/Set up a Connection or Network

    ?

Is that just an example or are you using the quotes showing in your example?

The username should be the name in your (main/original) email account. If you might be having trouble remembering it exactly, look in the email program, go to the Tools menu -> Accounts, it should appear there.

You might not need to put in the full address, example "eva-1@rr.neo.com ", the username is actually only "eva-1 ".

If I am helping someone to reconnect to their ISP and they may have, say, forgotten that they have changed their password, I ring the Technical Support for the ISP.

how I tried to connect to the internet

welcome center menu came up so I pressed connect to the internet

then it said "windows did not detect any networking hardware "

so i pressed "show connection options that this computer is not set up to use "

    then selected "broadband "

and typed in username and password (example, eva@neo.rr.com and eva, i tried both ways)

    it won't connect.
    any suggestions?

AKAJohnDoe; Yes, but it says "windows did not detect any networking hardware "
when i already plugged in the LAN cable thing.

Miz; sorry, yes it's an example. I tried (example) using domain and domain@neo.rr.com for my username but did not work.

mattman; I tried both ways for the user name but did not work. Windows doesn't even detect any networking hardware. Even when i type in username and password, some buttons pop up that says "diagnose the problem" "try again" and something else like that.

Is there any "wireless" connections involved?

Now you need to find Vista drivers for your hardware  :)

If you go to Start and in the search box type "device ", click on Device Manager. You will (should) see that the Network Adapters has problem listed (or doesn't appear at all).

The Windows method of getting drivers is to search for them on the internet (I always advise finding them for yourself). That might be fine, but you cannot connect to the internet.

    Options:

Try booting into Safe Mode (see Help and Support, "Advanced Startup Options "), Safe Mode with Networking Support. A basic set of drivers for the LAN may be loaded there.

Use the information that came with the computer (specifications) to find and download drivers on another computer and transfer them to yours.

Contact MS technical support. They may be able to help you identify and install the networking hardware (drivers).

I got to the Network Adaptors fine, and found all of the "unknown" adaptors (something similar to that, I don't remember exactly).

Is there a way to install drivers with this computer (a laptop) and move it over to the computer with vista?

    thanks!

No, you have to download the drivers, transfer them to the Vista machine and then install them.

Good to hear you got the drivers

You should transfer the driver files to the Vista computer, then install them.

The methods of transfer would be to burn them onto a CD disk or use a USB memory stick.

actually I haven't found any drivers yet...

the device manager has four devices under "other devices" (the unknowns?)
    -ethernet controller
    -multimedia audio controller
    -PCI input device
    -PCI simple communications controller

i've looked online for devices but couldn't find any.

any suggestions for where to look?

I have "linksys wireless-G 2.4GHz" connected to the computer
which is connected to the "motorola SBG900 "

The ethernet controller is the one stopping you from connecting to the internet (I hope ). The ethernet controller is inside the computer (where it connects from the Linksys, the Linksys is a wireless router).

I suggest you go to Device Manager, right-click on these:
    -multimedia audio controller
    -PCI input device
    -PCI simple communications controller
and select Uninstall. See if you can get Vista to identify them when you reboot.

Even if you have no success with those, uninstall the ethernet controller and see if there is any success there.

Windows can have a problem during installation when it cannot install drivers for one piece of hardware because it needs another driver installed first.

Did you try booting into Safe Mode with Networking? That might get you connected to the internet, but you will still need to find Vista drivers for your hardware.

Unless the driver situation "falls" into place, do you know anyone with some computer background that could help you? In the meantime try to find the computer's manual/s (the original CD disks may help, but they would be made for previous Windows versions).

It maybe a long shot, but did Vista update any drivers in the updates? I found that it replaced a wireless driver causing Vista to give a "no network found"

I don't think the Linksys router is where the fault is and it is only when I updated to SP1 where the problems began because it included an driver that cut off all network adaptors, this maybe your problem or not but worth checking.

Sometimes we are too trusting in MS updates;)

BTW I have a Linksys router and have never had a problem with it with Vista or XP

when i tried the safe mode,
    these:
    -multimedia audio controller
    -PCI input device
    -PCI simple communications controller
    needed to be installed.

and which service pack is recommended for vista?

the original CDs i cant find, and even if i did, they're probably for windows 98 or something like that.

It looks like the Ethernet Controller is installed in Safe Mode. Did you try connecting to the internet? If that worked you should be able to install the same driver in normal mode (look at the listing for Network Adapter in Device Manager when you are in safe mode).

Connecting to the internet is only part of the solution. You need to find the drivers for those other pieces of hardware. We don't know the brand or model numbers for that hardware. You could try running Everest (or Sandra) in my signature, it might give us some of the information. Navigating through the information and discovering drivers is another thing (that's why I asked if you knew someone that could help and if you could find information about the computer).

Vista is quite clever at identifying and installing drivers, BUT it won't tolerate hardware that is too old. Two of those unidentified hardware items mention PCI and may be "add-in" cards. They may be too old for Vista or you could see if the hardware manufacturer has produced Vista drivers for them.

Identifying hardware can be a matter of reading the model number printed on the circuit board. As you said, the main system is somewhat old, BUT Vista is running, it may only be a case of finding Vista drivers for those unidentified pieces of hardware or getting replacements for that hardware.

Without some identification it may prove to be very hard.

Is there any make and model printed on the computer? Example, a Dell 4200.

This computer is a Dimension 4300, pretty old.
I tried connecting to the internet with safe mode, but didnt work again.
i wonder if i buy a wireless card thing it would work?

and i bought a CD for driver updating (but requires internet connection)
and found out i needed a
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi driver and
intel(R) chipset device software to be updated?
    I'm not sure though

    See if this link works:
    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...D=DIM_PNT_P4_4300&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
On that page, go to Service Tag - Add or Edit Service Tag. On that page, go to "How do I find my Service Tag ". That will tell you/us the hardware in your system.

There are four different Network (Ethernet) drivers listed, the Service Tag should tell us which one you need. Finding a Vista driver for it might be hard.

The most recent chipset drivers I can see is dated 2004 and Vista is not listed in the operating systems supported. You could try them, Intel drivers usually baulk at installing on the wrong system.
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldId=8178&lang=eng

Dell have some drivers dated 2001, you wont find Vista drivers there. The manufacturers of the hardware may not supply them either. They may develop them at some stage in the future.

As you said, the system is rather (quite?) old. As I said, you may have trouble running Vista with older hardware.

If we can find drivers for your Network/Ethernet controller, you could connect to the internet. After you get the network controller working, you should be able to use the Internet Service Provider's (ISP) installation procedure to connect into their network for access to the internet.

I expect(?) the other drivers that are not working are related to the audio and maybe a built-in dial-up modem. You should be able to live without those for the present.

If you/we cannot find drivers for the ethernet, you can get an add-in PCI ethernet card without much cost:
    http://www.newegg.com/store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=27&Tpk=lan card
Let me know if you want to get one, I can check for compatibility.

    the computer is a "dimension 4300 "
i bought a CD for upgrading drivers (which needs internet so it was pointless)
and it came up with these two things for 'need updates':
    1. Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi
    2. Intel(R) chipset device software
I don't know if these are right but it might be right

and it didnt connect during safe mode

    Eva, check what I said:
We need to find drivers for the Ethernet/Network controller to get you connected to the internet. Personally, I don't hold much hope of finding them.

This would be the best solution in my opinion:
You should be able to get a decent card for less than US$10-15.

Number 2 is correct, but the most recent drivers are dated 2004. Vista was released in 2007 and I doubt Intel are going to build Vista drivers.
Your audio is apparently Creative Sound Blaster, but the model X-Fi appears to be wrong, it is not listed at Dell.

I know you would like a quick-fix answer (all of us would :)). The best I can tell you is that Vista is running. To get connected to the internet, the best and quickest way is probably to buy an Ethernet card.

Those drivers you mention will not help you get connected to the internet.

Hu? Why not? Took me all of 30 seconds to find them on the Dell Support site. Did I miss something?
