I appear to have a lot of spyware on my new Dell. NAV finds it but most of it does not seem to exist in the folder where NAV says it is. Spybot can't find anything other than sidestep, which I actually use.

The biggest issue is that when I hit tools|Internet Options, it says: "The operation has been canceled due to restrictions on this computer. Please contact your system administrator ". Well I am the system administrator. If I could fix that, I might be able to get a handle on the rest.

    Thanks....

Hi gwg and welcome to the boards. I see you have Spybot S & D installed. By default it locks the Internet Options for security reasons. To unlock, start Spybot S & D, click on the "Immunize" icon and on the lower part of the immunize page uncheck the box next to "Lock IE control panel....etc." This should solve your access to the IE Options problem.

BTW Spybot has to be run in the "advanced mode" to access the above option.

You could also uncheck the other two boxes if you choose.

Post back if this works or not. Thanks.

    Hi John

    Thanks for the reply.

I have two spbot icons. I used the one that doesn't call spybot with "/easymode ", but found no click box for "Lock IE control panel... ". In fact I looked through all the settings and other pages, and couldn't find it.

    Any ideas??

OK, now back to the original problem. My IE search bar has junk buttons for body part enlargement, gambling, credit cards and other spam subjetcs. How do I remove them?

Also, NAV, in its virus scan, finds a lot of adware, but says removing it failed. When I follow th epaths there is (often) nothing there. Could these be dangling registry key links? Can I simply search for the name in the registry, and delete the associated keys?

    Thanks

Download both Spybot and Ad-aware from the links in my signature, install, immediately update and run. Delete all they find. Download HijackThis from the CWShredder link in my signature. Place it in a permanent folder. Open and hit scan, then save log. Once it is saved it will open in notepad. Select all from the edit button, copy and paste the results here. Don't fix anything with it yet! Someone experienced with the logs will tell you what/how to fix.

gwg - I'm a little confused. Twice in this thread you've mentioned NAV finding spyware/adware. As far as I know, it doesn't. It will certainly find a virus but not spyware.

If the removal tools and Hijackthis don't get you completely fixed up and Norton keeps on saying you have a virus, please post the specifics.

    Norton Internet Security 2004
    Norton AntiVirusâ„¢ :
    • NEW! Expanded threat detection alerts you to certain non-virus threats such as spyware and keystroke logging programs.

    Maybe???

Yes, I have NIS 2004, which includes NAV with spyware/adware detection. It seems to detect OK, but not so good removing.

I will try the advice given by noahdfear.

    Thanks.

Assuming you already unchecked the control panel boxes in Spybots immunize feature, fix these too.

    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Configure Spybot and Ad-aware per my instructions here and scan again. Download CWShredder, open and with all other windows closed, hit fix. Run disk cleanup to clear all Temps, TIFs, etc. Check all boxes except compress old files. Reboot and post another log. You should also now have access to Internet options and can set homepage etc.

You should be able to set the search side bar back to defaults,

provided what noahdfear suggested doesnt work, by using the
customize button, or open googles options and set it to be used as default

Guys - thanx for the update. Wasn't aware that NAV-2004 did spyware. I'm still running 2003.

    Newt,
NIS 2004 tries to do spyware, but it's not as good at detecting or cleaning as Spybot, IMO. Any spyware finder is only as good as its database, and Symantec isn't quite there...yet. They may improve- after all, this is their first attempt to address the spyware problem.

I wouldn't tell anyone to buy NIS 04 just for the added spyware protection, spam filtering or ad blocking. NIS 04 does cooperate well with other programs that do the jobs better, though, so it doesn't hurt to turn it all on.

I'm still using NIS 03, but I've put 04 on my Mom's computer, and a few other friends and a couple of sisters in law's, and haven't seen any conflicts or issues on any of the comps because of Norton.
