    Hello,

I have a strange problem with my DVD burner.
I have an LG CH08LS10 burner, which is not even 3 years old. I don't burn often, but I've burned many DVDs with it w/o any problems. After a pause of maybe 3 months I wanted to burn a DVD again, but the data verification after the burn process failed (I always do a CRC check afterwards, comparing original with burned content). I burned 4 DVDs in total, all went to the trash can.

I've changed absolutely nothing in my environment: same OS (Vista), same burning software (Nero), same blank DVDs (I used them from the same stack as last time!). The problem only occurs with dual layer DVDs! I can still burn single layer DVDs with passed CRC check. LG firmware is latest, it hasn't changed for years.

Any ideas? I don't know what to do, I need to burn to free some disk space.

    Thanks,
    Sheriff Hobbes

    To me, this sounds plausible:
    Yahoo Answers.

A new drive will cost you $20-$50 for a DL DVD burner, $60-$100 with Blu-ray reader, $70-$120 with Blue-ray writer.

You can do a bit of troubleshooting, for example try a clean boot and a clean Windows install (have a spare HD?).

I couldn't find the invoice, but I must have bought this drive in 2009. Are you trying to tell me it is normal that after 3 years a drive stops functioning? LG is not a no name product and I haven't used it much.

No, but I have no idea of your usage patterns..

I also made some suggestions for troubleshooting the issue.

    Hi!
Here is another suggestion: the power supply.

I have had many problems after 1-2 years using a cheap power supply.

If it's the case, then you should buy another one unless you have the tools required to repair it. When some capacitors are bulging, many trouble may happen randomly.

    Good luck!

I go along with Arie, have had similar issues with LG, personally I find Pioneer to be a better burner.

jbenard, how could the power supply be related to this problem?

I guess you other guys are right, LG is just junk. :)
I ordered a BD burner from Pioneer at Amazon. I have no need to burn BDs right now, but hey, at least I got one. :)

    Hi Sheriff!

Keep us posted concerning your new drive!

I suggest you try burning your dvds at the lowest speed that Nero offers you while you're waiting for the new burner.

I have some models of burners from LG and Pioneer and ones from LG's seem to be more sensitive to variation from the electrical output.

I had issues with LG burners only when I used a bad power supply. I must have been lucky!

    -----------
I suggested the power supply because it is there to supply energy but more than that, to provide a regulated current.

When there is some demand of current, the capacitors are the first source but only for a very short time to let the power supply adjust itself.

If the capacitors have fail, the drop of current that occurs at the output may not be enough to freeze the all the system but the burner may not be able to overcome it while it needs more current at some precise moment.

    Have a nice day!

I've now burned several DL DVDs on my new Pioneer w/o a problem. I hope it lasts longer than the LG.
