I have(had) a CD-ROM problem that wasn't recognized. Tried to reinstall W98 with both a Boot Disk and a Setup Disk. Seems to go well, but when it restarts, I get the Windows flag saying it's trying to start Win98 for the first time (or close to that) and it won't do anything until I hit ESC and then I get the white on black DOS like screen that is hanging on "Toshiba Enhanced IDE CD-ROM Device Driver (ATAPI) Version 2.04" and copywrite stuff.
PLEASE HELP ME GET OUT OF THIS HANG!
    Thanks!

It seems that you have a dos driver loading, mucking up Windows Setup. A bad spot to do it, as that is when Windows is detecting hardware. I cannot see how this is done, unless you did not remove the floppy.
Are you installing onto a formatted hard drive? or are you doing an overlay install of Windows, or windows is installed and you are installing on top of it?

I did not reformat my hard drive when I reinstalled windows. Didn't want to loose everything. I had always had Win98se on this computer and merely tried to reinstall. It seemed to go well when I did it, but now get's hung up like I said.
Is there any way to get into DOS and delete a driver file so it doesn't hang?
    Thanks!

    Roy.
I think you now have a Windows registry that is not compatible with some drivers.
Maybe a boot from a floppy and a reg repair ?
    regards

I would try this. Boot with the floppy, type this at the prompt.
    c:\windows\command\scanreg /fix
Then go into Safe Mode, holding down the CRTL key when booting. Select Safe Mode, then when it is started up, go into Control Panel\System, click on the Device Manager tab and remove the CD-Rom entries. Look for anything else with a yellow ! or ? and remove it also. Reboot

    You might also try this.

    Boot to the floppy and at the A:/ prompt type;

Edit C:\CONFIG.SYS and check it for a line that contains a DOS CDROM driver.

If so just put REM and a space in front of it and restart the machine.

Win98 does not like DOS 16bit drivers being loaded during the re-install process.

After 98 is installed it can be put back to normal. But you only need to do that if you need the CDROM in DOS.
