Now that I've got my son's computer up and running and installed with a wireless PCI adapter, I attempted to update all the security fixes beyond SP3. Unfortunately, when I went to Windows Updates, what I got was this:

    Error: 0x8024D001
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

Though the page says help for any Windows Update issue would be handled by Microsoft at no charge, they immediately told me I would have to pay. I told them, "No thanks, I'll go to the real experts at windowsbbs.com. "

So, experts, what do you say about my dilemma?

Got that same error trying to update a graphics card and it asked me if I needed help. I clicked on the link provided and it took me to Fixit. I ran it and it could not resolve the problem. I went to the manufacturer's web site and let their scan tool detect any updates. It showed I had the latest software.

Might be worth Installing Belarc Advisor and see how many Updates there are missing. You can usually go to MS Updates from the BA page. Neil.

Windows/Microsoft Update seems to have a life of its own. Ever since I, in january 2011, installed XP Professional SP3, it has worked well. I have been able to start it from a link in Windows Explorer as well as from Start > All Programs > Windows/Microsoft Update.

Since a few months, the link that I have used no longer works but

    http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=sv

    leads to

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2497281

Not a big issue since Start > All Programs > Windows/Microsoft Update still works. Have you tried that route?

Thank you for all your suggestions. Apparently, I needed to install Net Framework 2.0 for it to work. It is downloading updates, now. When I first saw the Windows Update Agent page, before coming to windowsbbs.com, I closed out the page quickly, before reading it, as the cartoon character didn't look like Microsoft, and I thought it was just a pop-up. The program was helpful. It did inform me of the need for NF 2.0 and fixed some issues, though it couldn't fix "service registration is missing or corrupt." I'm not sure what that is or how to fix it. Also, I hope updates are working, as the install shield has said downloading 0% for a while, now, after the first download and restart. Maybe there is just a lot to download. I'll keep you informed.

It downloaded 163 updates, but failed to update Genuine Validation Tool (KB892130). Any suggestions on how to handle this? WinXP has been activated on this computer.

Have you tried to install this via Windows Update and Internet Explorer?

Yes, it functions fine, but maybe there is a connection with the previous message saying "service registration is missing or corrupt" and this failure to download Genuine Validation Tool?

I've run sfc /scannow, but all it does is to scan my Windows CD to see if all the files are intact and original, and then nothing happens (I'm just looking at the desktop with no program running). I used my slipstreamed WinXP CD, thinking I didn't want the program to take my computer back to preservice packs. Should I put in my original WinXP CD? Nothing is being repaired. What do you recommend?

That makes sense. You did what I would have done.

I'm out of ideas for the moment. Hopefully, someone else will chime-in here and help out.

I used Belarc Advisor, but couldn't see how to download the needed updates from that page, though it does list the missing updates.

Belarc usually includes a download link with any missing updates. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Click here to see all installed hotfixes. " That will take you to a page with all installed updates, and look for any missing updates marked with a red X. Click on (details...) and you should be taken to a download page for that particular update.

I seem to be able to download the updates by direct link to Microsoft download pages (via Belarc Advisor), but not through Windows Update, as there is still a hangup with that guaranteed validation tool. This is a fresh install and has been activated, so I don't understand the reason for this. I've never encountered it before. Does anyone have any suggestion how to eliminate this glitch?

Barry, look at my XP thread here and see if can be of any help to you. Especially the 2nd page.

Just be sure to have a recent restore point in case you decide to delete any updates.

Outside of Steve's suggestion in post #6, I don't what else to offer. Maybe some of the others can pitch-in here.

I'll try one more time to see if anyone knows how to get this computer to accept the guaranteed validation tool. If not, I guess I'll just have to close this thread. It sure would be nice if updates happened automatically, but, with only 4 more updates ahead of us, I don't see this as much of a problem... more of a curiosity. If I don't see a solution by the end of this year, I'll just mark this thread as solved.
