I am trying to add DOS to this Windows ME system. Part of the
process requires copying REGENV32.EXE from C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM, to
a temporary folder so it can be modified.

However, when I try to open the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder with Windows Explorer, WExplorer hangs at whatever folder/drive it had just previously opened. When I look at the Close Program Window, it indicates the previous folder name, with the statement that it "is not responding ". When I close it, I lose those items that were in the Task Tray, and of course, WExplorer closes.

I have tried a variety of methods to try to open the folder, but the results are always the same.

If I do a SEARCH for REGENV32.EXE, I can copy the "found" file to another folder. Also, is I expand C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM, I can acces any sub-folder/file.

I just cannot open the folder itself. Any ideas?

    Daizy,

That is the patch I was/am tring to install. The problem is that when
I try to access C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGENV32.EXE, Windows Explorer
freezes. After the CTRL/ALT/DEL to kill Windows Explorer, I need to reboot.

I could access the required files by booting with a 98 boot disk, then putting the files in a folder with WINMEDOS.COM and running that program, then putting the files back via the 98 boot disk. But, I still cannot access the folder C:\Windows\System.

Also, I reloaded Windows over the original C:\Windows and still cannot access the System Folder. However, By renaming C:\Windows the reloading Windows from the CD, I can get into C:\Windows\System. I suspect something is corrupted in the registry.

So right no I have 2 copies of Windows ME, and I switch between them to access old programs from the original Windows ME.

Its not a major problem, but I am trying to find a way to fix it.
