Has anyone else had a problem accessing the Internet after installing IE7? I've tried twice now. Each time, I've had to use System Restore to go back to IE6, after which everything works just fine.

Are you by any chance running ZoneAlarm? Recent updates have caused the problem you describe on a couple of occasions.

If you are using ZA update to the latest version.

    ZoneAlarm

Thanks for responding, Pete. No, I'm not using ZoneAlarm. Any other ideas?

Try running IE 7 with no add-ons - an add-on that you have in IE 6 may not be playing nice with IE 7 .....

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Some more ideas in this thread - did not work for the original poster, but may for you ....

    http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/31046884/cant-browse-with-ie7.aspx

BTW - no need to use System Restore to get back to IE 6 ....

Add/Remove Programs and scroll down to Windows Internet Explorer 7 and remove. Rolls back to 6.

    It's "moo "

Pete, I'd have to start IE7 this way (no add-ons) each time, right? I think I'll just stick with IE6. I use Firefox, anyway, so, as they say on "Sienfeld," "It's really moo." Thank you, though.

No - the object of that exercise is to determine if an add-on is causing the problem. If the problem is resolved by running with no add-ons you can then go to Tools > Manage Add-ons and enable them one by one until the culprit is found.

I could have posted go to Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable add-ons and disable all add-ons - then to proceed as above. Maybe I should have taken that approach first :)

    I don't think I have any add-ons

Ok, now I get it. Thanks, Pete. But what if I've never used IE in the 4 years I've had this computer and never added any add-ons to it? Now, are we back to square one?

Not exactly - some programs that you may have installed also install add-0ns, e.g. ....

Sun Java, Google toolbar, Macromedia shockwave Roboform ....

    Thanks, Pete

Oh, ok. I don't have time today, but I'll do what you suggest. Thanks, again.

Hi aks. Also in addition to what PeteC suggested, download and run ATF Cleaner from here, http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html. When you open it click the option that says select all and click empty selected button. Try starting Internet Explorer 7 again.

If your still can't access any webpage then try this option. Download and run Winsock Fix from here, http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html. If you still can't access the Internet after performing the above steps then one of your installed programs is probably conflicting with Internet Explorer 7.

    IE7 installed without the add-ons

Evan and Pete, I've installed IE7 again after disabling all the add-ons I found on IE6 --- and 7 is working fine now. Now, do I need to enable all those add-ons one and a time and see what happens?

Yes - one of them is conflicting with IE 7.

Basically it's your call :) If you have an enquiring mind - as I have - worked in development for 30+ years - then yes, but if you are happy with the fact that IE 7 is now working let sleeping dogs lie :)

If you find any lack of functionality in IE 7 it may well be caused by the lack of a specific add-on.

    Enabled some add-ons

Well, I guess I must have an "inquiring mind," then, Pete, 'cause I did wonder what would happen if I started enabling those add-ons. I enabled Adobe PDF Link Helper, Diagnose Connection Problems, and Google Toolbar Notifier BHO one at a time, rebooting after each. In all three cases, I couldn't access the Internet. Also, something I didn't mention before is that I also cannot shut down without pushing the button on my tower. I guess I'll leave well enough alone for now, anyway.

Thanks again for your help, Pete.

    Thanks, again, Evan

Hearing from you, Evan, reminds me of those two programs you suggested I try. I never did do that, but I'll keep your note, just in case. Thanks, again.

Hello aks. If you thought 7 was fun, wait until you try 8. Tried it myself and quickly rolled back to 7. Windows Update page was all white with no text or options. Basicly useless(page that is). Some people have had good luck with it. Not me. Won't try again.
