    Much like Markos,
I cannot get to the internet: I use COMODO and on the 9th, had a flurry of requests to access parts of the registry which, in a moment of stupidity, I said "yes" to three times (I thought I'd downloaded a "Java" update.... apparently not...).

All was well until the next AM when I found I could no longer access the internet via any browser as "Proxy Settings are incorrect ", "Cannot find Proxy Server" messages appeared.

Checked the COMODO Defense+ events and found this:

    C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe create process 7/9/2011 11:17:11

    followed by

    c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\0.091003299153657838 (exe) (several successive entries from 11:17:33 thru 11:20:37)

The Firewall events page shows the last successful access for TCP was 7/9/2011 at 11:17:36 PM, then (there is) nothing until 7:12:2011 when "System" was blocked repeatedly via TCP on a succession of ports. (Approximately 35 times in about 8 minutes).

Now for the kicker: I can get online to see and operate my GMAIL account.

I decided to see if I had any rogue add-ons to my Firefox browser, so went to tools> add-ons and waited for the page to load (I thought it was cached) to see what I had installed.

Just for the heck of it, I clicked on the GMAIL tab and.... it came up! I was able to read and reply to recent emails and thought I had the whole thing solved, that is, until I closed GMAIL and found the same "Proxy server" message again. I repeated the experiment (tools>add-ons> then hit GMAIL) and it worked once again.

ONLY the GMAIL. Attempting to start Firefox or YAHOO! Mail produces the "Proxy Server" message.

    I'm stumped.

The computer I'm presently using is several miles from my house so it will take some time for me to make replies/get downloads/whatever, but instructions sent via email should be available to me as long as I am able to access GMAIL.

(I'll be checking it all day today, however!)

(Please note: also post them on this thread so that others may benefit from them!)

Failing that, I will be able to check the forum on Thursday JUL 14th at appx 1600 GMT

Once again, the bacon sizzles in the pan...

My apologies for the rambling, but age is starting to leave it's mark.

Just for testing - disable Commodo & then try accessing internet. If you can access it, then its a firewall issue otherwise you may have some malware.

Don't forget to enable firewall after the test.

Thanks to all, but it seems I picked up some little nasty which busily proceeded to change my internet settings in Windows AND Firefox/IE to look for a proxy server. Luckily I finally found a post from the past which pointed me in the correct (at least I HOPE correct) direction. Once I changed all the settings back to "No Proxy ", "Automatic Detect Settings" or "Buggar Orf, you Little (censored) ", all as well in the World and my Internet was restored.

SO: I am now running malware checks and will post a thread over there for BRONI and the lads to scoff at, but I think thing's in hand for the moment.

Will mark this closed if all is well in that thread.
