Got a curly one but here goes.
    I've got a Canon SUB scanner 670U connected to Win98SE PIV 1.7.
When scanning a page of mixed text and pictures into any application the scanning software (ScanGear) suffers from an invalid operation in IOP.DLL after doing a preview. Previewing and scanning a photo or single picture works fine but add some text to the page and she fails guaranteed.
Now here's the interesting part. Scanning into the windows program "Imaging" presents no problem. I can scan anything into Imaging. Photos, text or a mix - no problems at all but any other program will get an invalid operation message with
combined text and pictures after performing the preview.
I don't want to necessarily scan text but sometimes it's on a page that has a picture
and I have to preview the page first.
    What gives? Any ideas?
I have downloaded all software from the web (some of it older than what was on the CD!) and installed it. No change.
So far Canon in Australia haven't helped. If anyone has any links or solutions I’d love to hear them.
    Thanks

    Wow!
That was quick. Will give it a try. It's interesting to note that 2 of the files there are newer than those I can get in Australia and 1 is older.
I gotta wait till I get to work. The computer is there so will have to be tomorrow.
    Thanks

    Well the plot thickens.
I brought the offending scanner and software home and installed it. Not one single problem. Scanning beautifully.
I also tried it on 3 different computers at work (I'm a teacher) and the software failed on all 3. At work they're all the same brand of computer just different models with different chipsets but they're all ASUS motherboards.
So I rang Canon Australia and they say it's the computers. I should try new video drivers (so I did) and new motherboard drivers (I haven't done that yet).
I rang Optima (the computer manufacturer here in Sydney and incidentally where I bought the scanner) and they say it's Canon fault.
    Typical eh?
Well this time I took names and phone numbers and I'm going to get them to talk to each other instead of me in the middle. If they don't sort it out the scanners go back for a refund. You see I didn't mention that I actually purchased 18 of these scanners and they all have the same problem.

If anyone follows posts this old.... I got it!
After hours on the phone with both Canon and Optima (the computer company) and Optima agreeing to take away a computer I have found a solution.
Optima wiped clean the computer and reinstalled Win98 SE. Canon drivers were then installed and all went well so I collected the computer and brought it back. I continued to install other applications onto the machine one at time, checking after each install to see if I could do a preview and then scan. A very slow process but the only way. All went well until I installed the printer drivers.
My computers are in a lab and are connected to a HP 4000N laser printer via its internal print server. After installing, uninstalling and generally mucking about I discovered that two of the drivers for the printer, PCL6 and PCL5e, were the culprits. If either of them was the default printer driver (and the PCL6 was the default) the Canon scanners crashed. If I used the Postscript driver all my problems disappeared. I can leave PCL6 & PCL5e installed just not make them the default.
    Can you believe it?
