When I drag and drop a file to what should be my DVD-RW drive I get the following message "drive:\ is not accessible. incorrect function." The drive worked perfectly until recently and I do not know when it started giving me this problem.

Now it gets complicated, My Computer shows the drive as "cd drive ", Device manager shows it as the DVD-RW drive that it truly is. I have removed it from service and it reinstalls the same way.

I am running an AMD 3000+ with a gig of memory, plenty of storage space with Win XP sp2. I do not have Roxio Easy CD creator on my computer.

    Any ideas?

    Finally fixed it

Since I could not get any help here I kept looking and finally found the problem.

When you go to "computer mangement ", "disk manegement" I found that the drive in question was not showing a drive letter and it was also showing as a CD drive (should be DVD). When I right clicked and clicked eject everything came on line. It now works perfectly.

I searched this site and Google and found nothing that would help. Most problems resembling this one references Roxio. I am sure that something caused this problem and if I find what it is I will record it here.

    Fix didn't last

Well, my fix did not last very long before it went back to the old problem as described in the first input.

If any one knows what might be, please let me know.

    Hello NOLA3716,

Is the Burner holding the assigned drive letter?

Did you add another device, especially a USB device?

    Regards - Charles

    No other drive

I have not added another drive and this drive will not hold it's letter. The only thing I have done with a USB is re-install my USB printer.

In my experimenting I loaded a copy of NERO and was able to write perfectly with it.

I have assigned a different drive letter and that does not work either.

    Hi NOLA3716,

This sort of problem seems to happen whenever a USB device is added or re installed.

Try uninstalling the burner in Device Manager, then re boot, allowing XP to re detect the burner. Whatever drive letter XP assigns to it - leave at that :)

Make sure the printer is plugged in and on when you do this.

    Regards - Charles

I seem to always avoid this type of "holding drive letter" issue because whenever I setup my systems I always use Y & Z for cdrom-dvdrom drives. That way drive letters never get "bumped" up or down or don't seem to get mixed up.
