I recently had my laptop cleaned of malware on this site (Thanks!!). But recently I checked the security settings to view the status of my firewall, antivirus, updates e.t.c. and I got this message:

    *****
"The Security Center" is currently unavailable because the "Security Center" service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer (or start the "Security Center" service), and then open the Security Center again.

Anyway, I got as far as the reboot and couldn't locate the rest....HELP!!!

I ran the "wscsvc.reg" file and then I rebooted. Then I right clicked on Security Center in "Services" and selected "Start" and got this error message:

    ******
Could not start the Security Center service on local computer.
Error 1068: The dependancy service group failed to start. I also went thru all of the 3 Related links on that page and nothing.

so what do I do next??

Hi virtue1boy. It seems that the Windows Security Center Service depends on the Remote Proceddure Call Service and the Windows Managment Instrumentation Service to be running. Make sure those 2 services are Started and on Automatic then see if you can start the Windows Security Center Service.

I did exactly what you said make sure both programs are set on automatic. The first one loaded correctly when I turned it on but the "Windows Management Instrumentation" gave me the exact same error as Security Center.....

Could not start the Security Center service on local computer.
Error 1068: The dependancy service group failed to start.

    I'm stumped???

Ran the program as "administrator" and rebooted. Security Center still disabled???? Do you think my new firewall (comodo) could be blocking system components? Should I try to uninstall it and see what happens??

Hey Evan, I uninstalled Comodo firewall and I started going back thru all of the recommended responses above (last one first). First, I ran wscfix.zip and rebooted...no change. Then I ran CMD /K SC QC WINMGMT and guess what? Now I have two dependencies (RPCSS and Eventlog). It sorta looks like this below:

    DEPENDENCIES : RPCSS
    : Eventlog

So what should I do now??

Ok. Now ensure that the Windows Managment Instrumentation Service is running as well as the Remote Procedure Call Service. When you have vierfied that those services are running try starting the Security Center Service again and see if there is any change.

Windows Management Instrumentation Service is the only one when I clicked "start" that does not run. I get an error code:

    ***
Could not start the Security Center service on local computer.
Error 1068: The dependancy service group failed to start.

Darn it. It seems we are going through a loop here. Try this, click Start< Run and type sfc /scannow and hit enter. Have your Windows XP CD handy in case SFC needs a file. Also after you run that command download and run Dial a Fix. Once you extract the files and run the program click the hammer button which will luanch Dial A Fixes advanced tools. Scroll down until you find the entry that says Reinstall WMI/WBEM. When that is selected hit the Go button and let Dial a Fix run. When Dial A Fix finishes close it and reboot the computer. See if you now start the Windows Security Center service.

    IT WORKED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (whoo,hooooooooooo)
Just one little problem? the security center says I have COMODO firewall running when in fact I deleted it already. I unistalled it in add/remove then manually deleted the file folder after that. Why is it still detecting it??

Great I am happy that were able to solve your problem. To resolve the Security Center telling you that you have Comodo firewall installed even though you don't follow these steps.

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Performance and Maintenance< Administrative Tools< Services
    2. Stop both the Windows Managament Instrumentation Service and the Security Center Service.
    3. Close the Services Window.
    4. Click Start< My Computer.
    5. Navigate to the following directory, C:\Windows\system32\wbem\repository.
    6. Delete the Repository Folder.
    7. Then re-boot the computer and Security Center should show no more traces of Comodo Firewall being installed.

BTW since you uninstalled Comodo make sure that you enable the Windows Firewall.
