I have a sony vaio laptop attached to a docking station. I had a second monitor attached to that, but set as my primary monitor with the laptop monitor as an extended desktop.

All was working well until i disconnected the monitor for a day and just used the laptop screen. Now I cannot get the second monitor to work, the option to "Use this monitor as primary" is greyed out.

    Anyone any ideas?

Try removing/uninstalling any monitors in Device Manager. In fact it would be best to remove them in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, you might find a long list of monitors for each time Windows has reinstalled it. After a certain number of times reinstalling it, Windows does not install it any more.

If this is the case, you might want to uninstall it before shutting down in normal mode when undocking or just go to Safe Mode and uninstall on a regular basis.

Thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested, but with no luck.

In the end I solved it by removing the ATI Catalyst Control Centre and just reverting to the standard ATI control panel which seems to have more facilities for adjustment in it.

Thanks for letting us know. Well done.

I've tried avoiding the installation of the control panel completely, but it won't let you. :) They seem to work smoothly until you make changes, then the cogs and wheels come to a grinding halt.
