RC is not for use for a general repair of Windows. Use it to repair the boot.ini for instance and other startup problems. Since you're not giving any specifics - then try the following repair method:

The following is from a post by Abaxas - a board member - on XP repair
    Quote from Abraxas:

Put your XP install cd-rom into the disc. If auto play enabled, the install process will begin, if not, double click on the drive.

What you should do is SKIP the first repair option (no "R" press) and just continue with your installation. After you accept the license by pressing F8, setup searches for existing installations of Windows. By following the onscreen instructions and pressing "R" at this point, your current installation will be repaired.
The following MS kb article explains, sort of. Follow method 2 as explained but don't use the first repair, otherwise it becomes a total install instead of a repair: http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;315341

Having used repair you will need to reinstall SP1 (if your copy of XP is from 2003 on – SP1 will be included in it) if you have it and reinstall all the windows updates, and you MAY need to reinstall your video drivers but check if XP has over-written them with its own generic ones. Everything else and all preferences should be ok.

    End quote

    Regards - Charles

The kb article is not there anymore.

It is possible that whatever you were trying to fix with the repair install is causing the problem.

So let me echo (and expand) Charlesvar's unanswered question - What's the error, if any? What problem were you trying to solve with RC?

You didn't do it right. Your computer is trying to reinstall Windows. You didn't make it to the Recovery Console. You should have been trying to do a repair, anyway, not going into the Recovery Console from the very limited info you have shared with us. You never did say WHY you felt a need to repair anything, or if you had tried System Restore or SFC, first. For all I know, you are mucking around in XP trying to resolve a software or hardware issue. If you want help, explain your problems in detail, and the steps you've taken to resolve them. Did you read CharlesVar's post in detail? Here is another link you may find useful Repair XP You should also indicate whether you have XP Home or Pro, because it makes a big difference.

Just in case you're new at this, do you know how to access BIOS and boot from CD? Can you access what's left of XP in safe mode (I think you mistakenly reformatted XP already, so the answer should be "no ") If you explain yourself, you will get accurate useful suggestions.

    Was that a better
    "nice try "?
