Today I have been doing some housekeeping - removed some games from my PC, and then run Disk Defragmenter.
Now Outlook Express won't start. Message reads:

"MSOE.DLL could not be loaded "

I have since located the file msoe.dll in my program files, and it does not appear to have been tampered with.

Oh dear, what have I done?

    Running windows ME
    Not sure which version OE?
Thanx for the link, it looks a bit complicated, and the description of how this might occur does not match anything I have done today.
Would system restore be a good idea?

Restore would be a good idea becuase it will take you back to a time before this problem started happening. Do you know how to access it?

Thanx Daizy. Yep. Found system restore, but there was no restore point after 11 feb 2002. Nothing straightforward on my pc! Going back to your link.

    Hi Kate
Have you been to the control panel under add/remove and tried to repair Outlook Express?

    MSOE.DLL

    Hi Kate,

Welcome to WindowsBBS. Have you tried running sfc to see if it has been altered or removed? If that doesn't work you can go here to get msoe.dll back.

    HTH :)

    Hi Daizy & Mike,

From your earlier link Daizy, I found the reason could be that I had unchecked the windows address book in settings (windows setup). Also its a common problem in ME.
Restoring the address book however, has not solved the problem.

I've tried downloading IE from the MS site, but I get an error box saying an earlier version is requiring a re-start of the system to complete. Can't tell you how many times I've tried a re-start ...... !

Cheers for your link Mike, cant find the exact file MSOE.DLL from it though. I can locate MSOE.DLL on my pc.

Did find a link there to 100 other people with the same problem and another offered solution, but I'm not holding my breath as it involves downloading as above!

    Many thanks, Kate

    Hi again Kate
Go to your control panel.......then to add/remove. Scroll down the list and find Outlook Express.........click on remove. You should be offered a choice to repair it.

    SFC

    System File Checker

Start > Run > Type in "sfc" (without the quotes) > Click OK :)

You will not believe this ....

I followed your instructions Daizy, but was not offered the chance to repair OE. I merely deleted it!

    And now it works!

I had IE 6 installed which was an upgrade on 5.5 which comes with ME. Perhaps the upgrade to OE was removed, leaving the original?? Dunno, but I am so pleased!

THANK YOU so much, Daizy  and Mike  for all your help.

    Kate:D

Congratulations Kate! So happy to hear you got it all sorted out. And thank you for taking the time to post back and let us know.
