Resolved Cannot start IE

    So I've had this machine about 3.5 years, a decent HP PC running Vista Home Premium. Normally I use Firefox, but yesterday I chanced on using IE, and it would not open. (I had last used IE about a week ago.)

    NOw, IE just pops open and pops closed again and a little box asks me if I want to save the opening page as a file. I just cancel that but the browser never really opens. The only recent changes on the machine have been the overnight Windows Updates coming from Microsoft itself. Other apps all seem to work OK. Monitor, printer, everything else OK too.

    What's with IE? (I need access to IE to get to "Internet Options" and I can no longer do it through Control Panel.)

    I tried to pull up a System Restore from about 2 days ago (the earliest one I could get) and after MANY minutes of trying, it failed.

    When in Control Panel, if I click the Internet Options button, nothing happens. At least not these days. ?

    What happens when you open a command prompt & run this command: control /name Microsoft.InternetOptions

    Do you know the version of IE?

    You can check the file properties of C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe. On the Details tab, note the File version.

    Try clicking Start, typing in inetcpl.cpl and pressing [Enter].

    That won't work, as trying to run it from a command prompt doesn't even work.

    There could be a policy, legit or malicious, that prevents IE from running or Internet Options from being used.

    OK, I'm back.
    1. IXPLORE.EXE when double clicked, just rapidly opens then closes IE. Hovering over the filename, does refer to Version 8. Maybe that means something.
    2. INETCPL.CPL does nothing, either in the Start box, or the Command Prompt.

    Perhaps I will attempt to download and reinstall IE from the beginning.

    OK, downloaded IE9 for 64-bit Vista. But it won't complete installation. HMMM?

    [Later tried to download and install IE8, but it says "newer version of IE found on this machine" so would not allow it!]

    "Microsoft Fix-It" did not work.

    "Windows Update" shows one "cumulative security update" file ready to install, but cannot be installed. Tried from several places. No luck.

    Encountered error 8007371C, referred to command "SFC/SCANNOW" which ran for many minutes and returned the message that it was unable to repair some files. In my next posting, I will attempt to paste the Log file results.

    Any ideas? thanks!
