I had been using my HP C6280 printer with an Ethernet connection to the router, then changed it to the USB port on my computer. It installed OK but I cannot select it (or any other printer) as the default printer. I can do it in the administrator account, but not in a user account. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer with the same result. I can print to it with most programs anyway, but Quicken says it is "Unable to verify the active printer at the system level....Quicken does not support the option 'Run as Administrator' ".

When I right click any printer in the Control Panel and check "Set as Default Printer ", nothing happens.

What am I missing? I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Did you uninstall the printer to the router before you changed it to USB? Should of been the first thing that was done.

[It installed OK but I cannot select it (or any other printer) as the default printer.]

How many printers have you got installed?
You may very well have Software conflicts with Printer Drivers if you have redundant Printers installed.

If your HP C6280 printer is the current one you use, make sure you uninstall any others and follow MrBiil's suggestion. Neil.

    no change

I uninstalled the network printer but after switching to the USB port. I uninstalled the printers (eg fax and Quicken PDF) which I don't use, but still no default printer.

Probably going to have to make the user an Admin - set the printer - undo the admin part.

During the installation process you will be instructed when to connect the USB cable to the printer. When I installed my HP Printer I plugged in the USB cable then tried to install the software and the printer would not let me do anything. Called HP support and was told you have to wait until you're told to plug in the USB cable or the printer will not play nice. If you tried this already please accept my apologies.
