I recently formated my HD and re-installed Windows however now it cannot see the Modem, and thus i cannot log onto the Internet. It was working before the format but now it doesn't even see it as an unknown device. I have tried taking it out and putting it back in but still nothing. I'm not sure but could it be a problem with it not being recognised in the BIOS.
It is a simple V9x Data Modem being run on a Athlon XP 1800+, 256RAM.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Alex

Do you still have the cd or disks that came with the modem and or the whole pc?

I don't have the disks for the modem anymore, think they accidently got thrown out.

I think i can now see the Modem but i don't have the drivers. How can i find the right drivers or are they all universal?

    Thanks

    Alex

I don't know what the make is off the top of my head. Will it be on the card itself?

I have got my hands on a few Modem drivers but am not exactly sure what do with them. They are not just a .exe installation program i was expecting but some config files, dll's and some other thing.

    Hi,
It is best to identify the modem first, find and install the most appropriate drivers without installing and uninstalling several that turn out to be the wrong ones (leaving different file versions in the system). The model number should be printed on the modem, if not, on an internal modem look at the main chip on the card. You could get generic drivers from the chipset manufacturer (example, a Rockwell V92). Generic drivers won't run special parts like faxes or voicemodems, they will allow you to connect and surf the web OK though.
Note: For an internal modem, check the properties, do not connect to the internet before it is set on Port 3 or 4. This may take a few reboots. If it does not change to Port 3 or 4 after several reboots, the drivers are probably the wrong ones.

If the drivers only consist of an INF file, right-click on the file and select "install ". You will then find the model appears in the "list" of selectable models when you run the modem wizard.

That's good to know. I know sometimes that if the wrong drivers are installed Everest will be unable to identify the hardware correctly.
I will try Everest first next time :D
