I found one post on this and tried to use it but it was too old so I am starting a new one.

I cannot see all the programs listed in my Start > All Programs list. I know I can set it to "Scroll" programs but I don't like that.

I liked Billy Bob's suggestion of making a new folder shown here http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=53374&highlight=programs+menu and dragging and dropping programs of kind into it. However, I don't know how to create a new folder in the All Programs list. When you right click it gives you options for whatever program you are hovering over whether it is highlighted or not.

For instance, I would like to group all my like programs into one folder. All my photo editing programs into a single folder, games into another folder, etc. etc.

Can someone please instruct me on how to accomplish this? I don't need all these folders to show up, but if I delete them from the All Programs list, if I ever wanted them back how would I do that? I just want them organized into folders.

You can add new folders/drag n drop and such here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Start Menu\Programs

    or here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\ALL USers\Start Menu\Programs

To expand a little bit on Steves advice.....

1.Right click the start button and chose either "explore" or "explore all users ".
(The difference will mean making organizational changes that effect your particular user profile startmenu or all users profiles startmenus. The choice is yours to make. Either is okay. My preference is "explore" since I prefer keeping any customizations confined to my user account.)

This opens the startmenu in explorer where you will add folders with names that make sense to you that can be used to organize your shortcuts.

2.In left pane, click on the "Programs" folders.

3.In right pane, right click and from the popup chose "New Folder ". Name it what ever you like such as Games, Tools, Office, etc.... something that relates to the folder shortcuts you will be dragging into it them. Create as many as you need or like.

At this point if you click your startbutton>all programs menu you will see the added folders. Now its just a matter of dragging and dropping the existing folders or shortcuts into the appropriate newly made folders. I recommend "right click drag and drops" using the popup option of "move here ". This helps cut down on the blooper of creating shortcuts to shortcuts.

The way I did it was to
    1-Right Click on the DeskTop
    2-Select - New/Folder
    3-Name it
4-Drag-n-drop drop the proper shortcuts into it.

Then later on I just drag-n-dropped the new folder over into the Startup Column. Just need to watch the screen so that you do create an actual new folder or add it to and existing one.

It does take some pratice. So at first it may be better to just copy the shortcut to the new folder rather than move it

Then as new things are addded I just drag-n-drop a new shortcut into the proper folder.

WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO :D Organized start menu, although I wanted for all users not just mine (since I am the only user anyway) so I found that some of them I had to move from my user start menu to the all users to get them all organized the way I want them.

I have googled and googled for ways to do this without brothering you all and never found anything, finally resorted to "ole" reliable.

Thanks so much for all your responses. BTW I assume that if I deleted something I would just got to Program Files and copy it back into the all users Programs folder?

    You guys are the BEST!!!!!!

All the items in the Start Menu are just "shortcuts" to applications and documents etc...You can add and delete to your hearts content....

Cooool! Glad to help you do some startmenu sprucing up. Thanks for updating.

As Steve said, the startmenu is a variety of shortcuts, some special. As long as you keep your deleting confined to the *\startmenu\programs folder shortcuts, nothing can't be reproduced by making new shortcuts and putting them back where you had them. I just want to make sure there is no misunderstanding and your left with the impression that you can delete files or folders from the actual *\ "program files" folder.
