I've never run into this before. I always use classic internet search and change the addressbar search to Google sites. Now when I search the addressbar for say, "mp3 downloads ". I get "The page cannot be displayed" and this in the addressbar: http:///? mp3 downloads. I've gone into internet options/advanced,and checked search from addressbar. I've also found a registery fix that would set Google as the default search engine from the addressbar. But it didn't work either.
Anyone know what happened,or what I did this time as the case may be?

What does your search setting in the registry look like?

This is the default (MSN WinXP SP2):

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
    Search Page "= "http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL]
    "provider "=" "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search]
    "SearchAssistant "= "http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchasst.htm "
    "CustomizeSearch "= "http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchcust.htm "

    To set Google use:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Use Search Asst "= "no "
    "Search Page "= "http://www.google.com "
    "Search Bar "= "http://www.google.com/ie "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL]
    " "= "http://www.google.com/keyword/%s "
    "provider "= "gogl "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search]
    "SearchAssistant "= "http://www.google.com/ie "

    Thank you Arie,
I looked in the registry. It's setup for Google search. Exactly as in your reply.I'm at a loss again.

First I would try to Repair Internet Explorer

If that doesn't work, follow the instructions here and post a HJT log in the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum to check if something is interfering with the search function.

    Thanks again Arie,
I should have mentioned I use Spybot S&D and Adaware SE personal. Both updated with all protection enabled. I got a lot to do today so I'll post back later with the results.

Arie,I couldn't use the Repair Internet Explorer link you gave me because I don't have a Windows XP SP2 cd. This may lead to another post on how to get this from a Norton Ghost restore cd. So I used the instructions below that to reinstall Internet Explorer. But when I clicked the link to reinstall it took me to Windows Update, which scans my system and reports I don't need any updates. Do you know of a direct link to download Internet Explorer 6? I looked around but couldn't find one.

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Ok,nevermind the Internet Explorer install. My addressbar started working again. I changed the registry as instructed: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Active Setup \ Installed Components \ {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
right-click the IsInstalled value, and then click Modify
Change the value data, from 1 to 0
I couldn't find a download for IE6 SP2, but that's when I found I could search from the addressbar again.
Should I now change the value data back to 1?

You can't download IE6 SP2, it's incorporated in WinXP SP2. What's the version of IE as reported from Help > About Internet Explorer?

OK, so you have the latest. If the problem is solved, I wouldn't do anything else.
