    This is great...

My roommate says that she put her Dell Dimension 4700 on standy last night. Now we can't get it to start up at all.

    The monitor doesn't turn on

and there are 6 error beeps when the power is turned on.

Please help me! Or my roommate will eviscerate me with a spork.

    *edit*
I checked the back of the tower and noticed that there are four indicators noted as A B C D. A & B are orange and C&D are green. I was just wondering what those mean.

I unplugged the monitor cable and the monitor will display that the cable is disconnected, etc... and when I plug it back in the monitor goes blank and powers down.

So the Standby issue resides in the computer, but I don't know how to to tell the computer to wake up.

Yank the power cord out and shut it down.
Plug it back in and boot er back up.

    I tried what you said.

    It solved nothing.

After I yank out the power cord, everything looses power.

I put the cord back in, and turn it on...power is supplied.

But then a single series of Errrr-errrr-errrr errrr-errrr-errrr's starts sounding.

After that...nothing happens. The monitor is still assuming it's supposed to be asleep and the fans keep spinning as fast as they can (or so it sounds).

To save me searching and to increase your knowledge of the machine a great deal (no disrespect intented), look up your model on the Dell website and search for/find out, the meaning of the beep code. Be careful of long or short beeps.

The beep codes may be listed in the computer's manual, but you will find them somewhere at Dell.

It is most likely a problem with RAM or graphics. At the least, the item may need to be reseated. At most, you may need to replace that piece of hardware.

Open the case and check that all the fans are spinning freely and there is no buildup of dust (eg., in heatsinks) that could be a cause of overheating. Loosen the dust with a soft brush, take the case outside and blow the dust out (you can buy cans of compressed air at electronics or office suppliers).

Replace the CMOS battery, on systems that default to "Quick Boot" a low battery could cause problems.

There are forums at Dell if the people here cannot help you (Dells are not ordinary computers).

There's nothing worse than living with two girls...

Okay, I reseated the memory, and now it's working...

Thanks for the heads up, Mattman!

I know the "girls" situation, I am surrounded by them (get it fixed and make it quick :D). Glad it wasn't complicated, being squeezed by a cantankerous computer and impatient females is not my idea of fun
