    Hi:

I have spent quite a bit of time trying to debug this error. When ever I try to reply or forward a received email on my laptop that has Outlook 2003 with latest service packs, I get a 554 relay denied error. I can create new emails and send without problems. If I try the same thing on my desktop with a comparable setup it works fine.

My ISP is Charter and I have discussed this issue with them several times with the same results. It must be your application. I have tried using logon authethication and logging onto the pop server first without any success.

As I am a realtor and received a lot of mail this is quite debillitating to my time and business. Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

Oh I am not a novice I have over 30+ years hands-on IT experience inclusive network design and implementation.

    Thanks in advance.

In your email account settings do you have the Incoming Mail Server (POP3) set as pop.charter.net and Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) set as smtp.charter.net?

    554 Relay Error

    Whiskeyman:

Thanks for the reply. Yes both the pop server and smtp server settings are set as you suggested above. I have also tried login authentication and forcing a login to the pop server first. Everything works just fine if I create a new email. It only fails with the 554, relay denied error if I reply to an email or forward it. Very bizare. I believe it started happening a few months ago after I did an office upgrade. I am using MS Office 2003 on a newer toshiba laptop running xp media center which is has all curretn updates. Charter has been absolutely of no help with this. What makes it even more strange is that I am running the a similar setup on my desktop and it doesn't fail.

I do have two email accounts defined, one for my charter account and one for my realtor acccount with prudential.

    Any other thoughts.

    Are both accounts with Charter?
Are you connected to the Charter ISP account when you're trying to send or are the realtor ISP account?

    554 Relay Error

    Steve:

    Thanks for the response.

The email accounts are with different providers. And it happens with either account. I have to purposely default the main email account to match the ISP I am currently connected to (that is a real pain). But even after doing this any forwarded or replied to messages get rejected. Today I tried deleting the email account and setting it up again but that didn't help. Its something strange to this ms outlook setup I think.

Though it would be a real royal pain, I am tempted to uninstall office 2003 and reinstall it then reapply the service packs. Oh joy to the thought of that.

    Any additional thoughts.

In the Account settings->Reply Address, is it set to match the ISP you're using at the time?

Meaning, is the Charter Account set to a reply address of "null/blank" or the Charter account.

    Steve:

Both email account internet mail settings are blank/null for organization and reply address.
