    Dear Expert

Initially I have got 2 IDE hdds segate (each one 40 GB ) D and G and one

Each IDE hdd has one partition (NTFS)

I named D hdd as : DATA and I named G hdd as : BACKUP

And I have got one SATA hdd (500 GB) that was dived into two partitions C (Active and its OS windows 7) and H,,,,they are NTFS

I named C partition as : OS ,,,,and I named H partition as : STORAGE

Everything was fine till recently I installed a new SATA hdd western digital ( 1 TB ) which came under drive letter E and I named as : DOCUMENT

Now surprisingly names for G and H (BACKUP, STORAGE) disappeared.

When I try to right click on each G (hdd) and H (partition on SATA 500 GB) and choose the option rename ,,,,nothing happen ,,,,means I cannot rename them to whatever they were before

While I can rename partition C and hdd D

And I can rename SATA hdd ( 1 TB ) as well,,,,,,I named it : DOCUMENT

    Why this happens ?

I tried to use the diskmgmt.msc tool to edit the drive setting I was able to change the names (not drive letter ) but when I go to My Computer ,,it does not show me the changes!!!!

    Thanks

It might (possibly?) have something to do with where the boot files are stored. If you installed the OS with a IDE HDD at the Master location on the primary IDE, the boot files might be located there. Look at the Boot Options in the startup configuration (BIOS). If the OS was to go onto the SATA HDD, I would install the OS without any IDE HDDs attached (or at least the primary Master) and set the boot options to that SATA HDD.

Have you set the individual HDDs as primary partitions, not logical/extended partitions of another HDD?

    Do you mean this :

    Code:
IDE Channel 0 Master ST3500418AS,,,,,This is SATA 500 GB
IDE Channel 0 Slave WDC WD10EARS-00Y5B1,,,,,,This is SATA 1 TB

IDE Channel 1 Master ST340016A,,,,,,,,,This is 40 GB
IDE Channel 1 Master ST340810A,,,,,,,,,This is 40 GB

    Yes.

    Thanks

The only other possibilities I can think of is that there is a clash of drive letters.

Do you use any network drives? Make sure that the drive letter is not the same as the partitions. Do you connect any external drives, they might be trying to "steal" the drive letter of the HDDs. Try to "spead out" the drive letters, not just C, D, E, F, G, H, because non-fixed drives will try to take the lowest.

Try disconnecting any of the drives you only use for storage and see if you can isolate one that is causing it.

If the IDE drives are for storage, try reversing them as Master and Slave.

There might be a lot of factors involved.

Credit goes to the pointer who advised me to check this site below

    http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/120247-drive-name-change.html

    Code:
    METHOD TWO:
    For Devices with Removable Storage
Now by modifying the registry I can change the drive name (not letter) but this is annoying because I prefer to do it in the normal way if it is possible not by modifying the registry.

Those hdds (two of them) are shared with other computers and I am not using any network drives. I did disable the sharing as well.

I will try that , although I had unplugged WD 1 TB because the problem happened when I mounted it ,,,,but still no joy

    Thanks

As you can expect, I haven't come across that problem, but like any problem, that's the way I start to attack it.

I have come across problems with the more HDDs (partitions) added. As I said, try to leave some low drive letters for external drives you attach, because Windows will automatically try to set it to the lowest. If it comes across a something a little strange it starts getting confused.

If you have changed drive letters around in the past (or external drives were connected at some stage) it might "remember" those and have trouble with the new ones.

I had problems with one external (memory) drive and set it's letter to P:. Windows always remembers it is P: now and I have zero problems. If you have any external drives, set them to a high drive letter so that they won't conflict with the lower letters.

I have come across drive lettering problems, I expect that's why you are having problems with the names.
