    cannot remove Win32.Winshow.BD virus

thanks in advance for any ideas on this

running xp w sevice pack 2
e trust antivirus software from computer associates.

    symptoms:

    1) i get an infection notice each time i launch internet explorer
    2) "my computer" seems to be broken, as when i click it, nothing happens. control panel does the same thing. those functions cause the system to hang generating a dr watson report.

so far i have tried sfc /scannow. i have turned system restore off, ran the virus scan in safe mode. it found the win32.winshow.bd virus, but on reboot nothing has changed.

this thing is worse then hep c

    thanks

    steve

I recommend you download HijackThis.exe from here. Save it to a permanent folder (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT). Open and click scan, then save log. Once it is saved it will open in notepad. Select all from the edit button, copy and paste the results here. Don't fix anything with it yet!

Download and install Ad-aware SE Personal, allowing it to check for updates. Link is in my signature. If you already have the current build, check for updates.

Download AboutBuster from the followin location.

    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

First unzip all files from the zip folder to a folder on your desktop. Open and double click AboutBuster.exe, click ok, then update. A new screen should popup. On that screen click Check for Updates. If it says it found an update click Download Updates. If it doesn't, it will automatically tell you and exit. Close for now.

Click here to download cwsserviceremove.zip, unzip it to your desktop and have it ready to run later.

Click start then run and type services.msc, then hit enter. Locate Network Security Service, right click and choose properties. Stop the service, then set to disabled. Click Apply then OK. Close the services window.

    Turn off system restore.

    Reboot to safe mode.

Double click the cwsserviceemove.reg file you unzipped earlier. Click yes to merge it to the registry.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close all other windows and click fix.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B5651200-6BB1-3F15-2353-EE47F0DA403A} - C:\WINDOWS\addcy32.dll

    O16 - DPF: {A18B7EC3-EECA-11D3-8E71-0000E82C6C0D} - http://www.xxxtoolbar.com/ist/softw.../ist_remove.cab

Very odd to see Internet Explorer set to run at startup.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iexplore.exe] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
Although it looks legit, if you did not set it that way, fix that entry also.

Make sure hidden files are set to show.

Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.

Open AboutBuster, click start then OK. Exit when finished.

    Open CWShredder and click fix.

Open Ad-aware and run in full scan mode. Delete all it finds.

Reboot back to Windows and run Housecall. Make sure the box to autoclean is checked.

Post a new HijackThis log when done.

    Fix the following with HijackThis.

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\udllm.dll/sp.html#44768
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\udllm.dll/sp.html#44768
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Then click the config button, then the misc tools button. Now click the Delete an NT Service button. Type in NSS and click OK.

Download the stand-alone CWShredder 2.0 from here. Save it to the desktop. Double click to install. Open CWShredder from the new shortcut on the desktop, close ALL other windows and click fix.

Run AboutBuster again and reboot when done. Post a new HJT scan log.

Looks good. :) Re-enable System Restore and create a manual restore point. Also recommend you download Spybot Version 1.3 from my signature, install and update. Allow it to load SD Helper. Open it up and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it (always recheck this setting after downloading updates). Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install, enable all protection and update. Check for updates regularly and watch for any protection being disabled. Then, still in Spybot, click tools button, then IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file.
Then download IESpyad.exe, double click to extract (it extracts to C:\IESpyad by default), open the folder, double click the ie-ads.reg file and allow it to merge into the registry.

That will give you some added layers of protection against unwanted parasites.
